The only national park in Catalonia, lake to lake.
Why it stands out
- 01
The only national park in Catalonia.
It’s not just another protected area: it's the only territory with the highest level of protection in all of Catalonia, declared in 1955 in the Pyrenees of Lleida.
- 02
An unparalleled density of lakes in the Pyrenees.
Nearly 200 glacial tarns concentrated in a handful of valleys. The Colomers cirque alone gathers one of the largest groupings of lakes throughout the entire mountain range.
- 03
Two doors, two landscapes
By Espot, to the east, the high lakes and Els Encantats. By Vall de Boí, to the west, the plain of winding waters and the wetlands. Same park, two distinct experiences.
- 04
4x4 access brings you closer to the high mountains.
4x4 taxis will take you inside the park, so even those who don’t walk much can reach landscapes that elsewhere would require hours of climbing.

How to get there
Access: The interior of the park can only be explored on foot or by 4x4 taxi (private vehicles are prohibited). 4x4s depart from Espot to Estany de Sant Maurici; from Boí, to planell d'Aigüestortes.
Best time to visit: June to October, with clear trails and open shelters (usually June-September). In winter the park is covered in snow and can be explored with snowshoes or mountain skis.
Shelters: Amitges, Ernest Mallafré, Colomers, Ventosa i Calvell and others support crossings like Carros de Foc; it is advisable to book a place during the high season.
Park rules: Wild camping, making fires and straying off the trails are prohibited. The high mountains change quickly: always take layers of warm clothing and waterproofs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive my car into the park?
No. Private vehicles are not allowed inside. Access is on foot or by 4x4 taxi from Espot (east side) or Boí (west side).
What’s the best time to go?
From June to October. In summer the high lakes are accessible and the shelters open; in autumn the forests turn color. In winter the park can be explored with snowshoes or skis.
What’s the difference between the Espot gate and the Boí gate?
Espot, to the east, provides access to the Estany de Sant Maurici lake and the high lakes of Ratera and Amitges. Boí, to the west, leads to the Aigüestortes plateau and the wetlands, with gentler trails.
What are the Carros de Foc huts?
It’s the most famous trek in the park: a circuit linking all nine mountain shelters, usually in five to seven days. It’s demanding and is only done when the shelters are open, in summer.
Are there routes suitable for families or people with limited mobility?
Yes. 4x4 access brings you closer to the interior of the park, and near the planell d'Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici there are flat stretches. There are also special access permits for people with reduced mobility.
