Limestone, olive groves and caves under the Córdoba sky
Why it stands out
- 01
Southern Córdoba's pioneering via ferrata
355 m route and 80 m vertical in the Bailón gorge. Steel cables, staples and a Nepalese bridge; a brief technical section and direct views over Zuheros.
- 02
A cave with real prehistory
The Bats' Cave preserves Early Neolithic rock paintings (6,500 BC) and stalactites up to 6 m. Cultural Heritage Site since 1969.
- 03
A UNESCO Geopark free of crowds
32,000 ha of folded limestone, sinkholes and poljes. Recognised by UNESCO in 2015. Marked trails free of the pressure that hits Cazorla or Grazalema.
- 04
DO olive oil at the mill
DO Priego de Córdoba and Baena produce some of the world's top-rated extra virgin olive oils. Local mills host tasting-tours during harvest (November-January).
Who it fits
Fits if you like technical-but-accessible via ferratas, caves with real prehistory and white villages free of overtourism. Great for couples or small groups blending adrenaline with serious food.
Doesn't fit if you want multipitch climbing (go to El Chorro, Málaga), beach time or a packed urban-monument agenda. Skip it if you need step-free access.

How to get there
Best season: October-May. Summer makes the limestone too hot to climb after midday.
Via ferrata gear: harness, helmet and certified shock absorber (provided by the guide). Approach shoes with sticky sole.
Access: Zuheros sits 70 km from Córdoba and 100 km from Granada. A-318 and A-339 are the main roads.
Permits: the Bats' Cave requires advance booking (guided visit, limited capacity).
Recommendations
Pair the via ferrata in the morning (cooler rock, fewer people) with the Bats' Cave in early afternoon. Book a tasting at an olive mill in Priego de Córdoba or Baena to round off the day. With a car, drive up to the Sierra de la Horconera viewpoint at sunset.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need experience with via ferratas?
The Zuheros via ferrata is technical but accessible to beginners in good physical shape and without a fear of heights. Local guides provide all certified equipment.
How long does the via ferrata take?
2-3 hours including approach and descent. Add another hour to return to the town at a leisurely pace.
Can you go in the summer?
You can, but the rock reaches 40 °C at noon. Best early in the day or, ideally, from October to May.
Is the Cave of the Bats open for free visits?
No, only with guided tour and prior reservation. Limited capacity to 25 people per shift.
Is there lodging in Zuheros?
Yes: rural hostels and bungalows at the municipal campsite. Also, country houses in Luque and Carcabuey, 10-15 minutes away.
How do I get there without a car?
Bus from Córdoba to Doña Mencía or Cabra and taxi/transfer to Zuheros. Having a car is much more convenient for getting around the towns.
