§02 — The place

Vertical limestone over Levante's farmland

Alicante's hinterland hides an under-exploited gem: the Penya del Figueret in Relleu and El Ponoig in Polop are two via ferratas with suspension bridges, abseils and the longest zipline in the Valencia region. Behind them, Sierra Aitana and the white villages of Marina Baja sit 30 minutes from the sea. The adrenaline is concentrated, the rock is freshly equipped, there's less queue than in the Pyrenees and the sky stays blue nine months a year.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

    Longest zipline in the region

Penya del Figueret closes with the longest zipline in the Valencia region, installed by local riggers as the route's finale. You glide over the gorge with views of the village.

  2. 02

    Recently equipped rock

Penya del Figueret and El Ponoig are modern ferratas (post-2010), with bolts, cables and bridges in good shape. No queues or wear of the Pyrenean classics.

  3. 03

    Sierra Aitana as backdrop

Pico Aitana (1,558 m) is the province's highest peak. Its slopes offer trails to combine ferrata + panoramic hike, with Mallorca visible on clear days.

  4. 04

Adventure + sea, 30 minutes apart

Few destinations let you climb in the morning and reach the Mediterranean by sunset. El Albir, Altea and Benidorm sit 25-30 km away, with coves, marinas and restaurants.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Photography

Fits if you want two serious via ferratas over a weekend, based in an inland village with the option to drop down to the sea at sunset. Ideal for couples or experienced friend groups.

Doesn't fit if you want Pyrenees-grade or very easy beginner ferratas (Marina Baja is medium-high). Skip in July-August when rock heats up.

More practical details

Physical level & requirements

Medium-high fitness and no vertigo. Two K3-K4 ferratas can be demanding on day 2; consider swapping for a Sierra Aitana walk if you're stretched.

How to get there

Best season: October-May. In summer the wall can hit 40 °C; climb only at dawn.

Via ferrata gear: harness, helmet and shock absorber (provided by guide). Approach shoes.

Access: Relleu and Polop sit 25-30 km from Alicante (A-7/N-332). Alicante airport 35 minutes.

Difficulty: both K3-K4. At least one previous guided via ferrata recommended.

Recommendations

Day 1: Penya del Figueret in the morning (more complete), lunch in Relleu or Sella, swim at El Albir cove. Day 2: El Ponoig at dawn to avoid heat, paella or oven-baked rice in Polop. With a car, stop at Guadalest Castle on the way back.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to be a via ferrata expert?

No, but you should have done at least one before with a guide. Penya del Figueret and El Ponoig are K3-K4 with overhangs; local companies accompany you with certified equipment.

Can both be done in a weekend?

Yes, one per day. It's tight but feasible if you arrive Friday night and sleep in Relleu/Polop.

Are there rural accommodations nearby?

Yes: rural houses and bungalows in Relleu, Sella and Polop. The offer is modest — book well in advance for holidays.

Can it be combined with beach time?

Yes. Albir and Altea are a 30-minute drive away, ideal for going down at sunset after the via ferrata.

Is July-August a good time to visit?

Too much heat. The limestone rock exceeds 40 °C and overhangs in full exposure are unviable. Prioritize October-May.

How to get from the airport?

35 minutes by car from Alicante-Elche via the A-7. Renting a car is essential to get around between Relleu and Polop.
