Where cava is born and the trails smell of damp earth
Why it stands out
- 01
Catalonia's oldest DO
The Penedès Designation of Origin was recognised in 1960, but vine cultivation here is documented back to the 6th c. BCE, with Iberian and Roman archaeological sites in Olèrdola.
- 02
Birthplace of cava
In 1872 Josep Raventós made the first traditional-method sparkling wine bottles in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. Today 95% of Spanish cava comes from this county.
- 03
Xarel·lo, the local identity
Xarel·lo is a white grape native to the Penedès that brings structure, acidity and the Mediterranean character of cava. Together with Macabeo and Parellada it forms the traditional blend.
- 04
VINSEUM: Catalan wine museum
In Vilafranca's old quarter, the Wine Cultures Museum occupies the former Royal Palace (12th-14th c.) and holds over 4,000 wine and cava-related pieces.
Who it fits
It fits if you like wine with context (process, history, terroir), value nearby destinations without flying, and want a slow-paced weekend. Works as a couple, with friends and — in the hiking variant — with kids over 8.
It does NOT fit if you expect beaches or high-adrenaline adventure. With small kids, pick a more family-focused hub; for real mountain hiking, look at grazalema-senderismo or alto-aller-cabanas.

Frequently asked questions
How many wineries can be visited in a weekend?
Realistic: 2-3 tastings (morning + afternoon) without overload. Each visit lasts 90-120 min including explanation and tasting.
Is driving between wineries necessary?
It helps. Family wineries are scattered across the county (15-20 km radius). Some offer transfer from Vilafranca for an extra fee.
Can tasting be combined with hiking or MTB?
Yes, the hub's three packages are compatible. Typical: outdoor morning, tasting + cultural walk in the afternoon.
Are there non-alcoholic options for companions?
Most wineries offer must, non-alcoholic vermouth or mineral water. Some have vegan/alcohol-free pairing menus on request.
Does it work as a couple with kids?
The hiking variant is the most family-friendly (gentle routes, rural house with garden and pool). Cultural tasting is age 14+; MTB requires intermediate cycling skills.
Should I rent a car or come by train?
Train to reach Vilafranca (45 min from Barcelona-Sants). To move between wineries, car or bike from your accommodation.
