§02 — The place

The Alcarria Cela wrote about, now with wineries

Guadalajara's Alcarria is a honey-coloured plateau among oak groves and lavender fields. Cela immortalised it in his 1948 'Viaje a la Alcarria'; over seventy years later it's still one of Spain's least crowded areas. DO Mondéjar — Guadalajara's only wine appellation — grows on red clay-limestone soils at 700 m, with a mild Mediterranean microclimate. The Mar de Castilla reservoirs, half an hour away, add nature and kayaking for alternate days.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

Only Designation of Origin from Guadalajara

DO Mondéjar is the only wine designation of origin in the province of Guadalajara, recognized in 1996 over 2,100 hectares.

  2. 02

    IGP Honey from La Alcarria

The honey from La Alcarria is one of the few honeys in Spain with a Protected Geographical Indication, recognized since 1992.

  3. 03

    1 hour from Madrid

Direct access via A-2 to Guadalajara and N-320 to Mondéjar: 75 km, one hour by car, without rush-hour traffic.

  4. 04

Sea of Castile half an hour away

The Entrepeñas and Buendía reservoirs offer 8,300 hectares of water for kayaking, SUP and light sailing: an ideal option for a second day beyond more wineries.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Ecotourism Romantic History Local Life Gastronomy
A good fit for a quiet getaway close to Madrid (1h drive) with no crowds. Not a fit if you expect the muscle of a Ribera del Duero or the cachet of a Rioja: wines are fresher and the offer is low-key. Skip it too if your priority is nightlife and high-end dining: lodging is family hotels and the food is simple.

How to get there

Access: A-2 from Madrid to Guadalajara (40 min) then N-320 to Mondéjar (25 min). Madrid-Mondéjar total: 1h-1h15.

Reservoirs: Entrepeñas and Buendía open year-round; kayak/SUP rentals May-September.

Recommendations

From Madrid, one night beats a day-trip — the lazy lunch with wine makes it worth staying. Combine a morning winery with an afternoon of villages (Mondéjar, Pareja, Sacedón) and book the hotel's pairing dinner one night. If lavender is in bloom, add Brihuega.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many wineries are in DO Mondéjar?

About a dozen, mostly family-run. Only some open to the public by appointment — always book.

Worth the trip from Madrid?

Yes for one night, especially in autumn or lavender bloom. As a day trip, the A-2 return eats half the plan.

What's the accommodation like?

Charming family hotels and rural houses. Don't expect 5-star: it's village-scale, home cooking and personal service.

When does lavender bloom in Brihuega?

Between 10 and 30 July depending on the year. There's a lavender festival and sunset concerts among the rows.

Can I combine with watersports?

Yes. The Entrepeñas and Buendía reservoirs are 25-40 min from Mondéjar with kayak, SUP and sailing May-September.

What's the DO Mondéjar wine like?

Fresher and lighter-bodied than Ribera or Rioja. Tempranillo and Cabernet in reds, Malvar in whites. Good value for money.
