Endless pine forests, glacial lakes and a village that smells of woodsmoke
Why it stands out
- 01
Southern Europe's most extensive pine forest
Soria-Burgos Scots pine forests cover over 100,000 continuous hectares, one of the best-preserved forest blocks on the continent. Habitat for griffon vultures, roe deer and boletus.
- 02
Laguna Negra: legend and geology
Antonio Machado set his 'La tierra de Alvargonzález' here. A Pleistocene glacial lake at 1,700 m, surrounded by rock and birch forest. Easy access at the end of the 55 km climb.
- 03
Starlight Reserve sky
The Pinares area is certified as a Starlight Reserve and Tourist Destination: low light pollution allows Milky Way viewing, Perseid and Leonid meteor showers.
- 04
Traffic-free cycling
SO-820 and SO-840 roads cross pine forests with minimal traffic. The forest track network lets you link routes without touching tarmac — ideal for family touring or gravel.
Who it fits
Fits if you enjoy road/gravel cycling at mid-altitude (1,000-1,700 m), silent forests and honest mountain cooking. Works well for couples or fit groups of friends.
Doesn't fit if you want highly technical MTB (try Gredos or Sistema Central), beach or urban culture. Winter brings snow and route closures.

How to get there
Best season: May-October. June and September are ideal: mild temperatures, long days, no evening storms.
Gear: gravel or rigid MTB, mixed tyres. Forest tracks have loose gravel in places.
Access: Vinuesa sits 35 km from Soria via SO-840. From Madrid it's 230 km (A-2 motorway to Almazán + secondary road).
Starlight Reserve: the local sky is certified for astronomy; a night stop is worth it.
Mushroom picking: October-November requires a permit on public mountain land.
Recommendations
Set off early (8:00) so you climb to Laguna Negra in shade. Stop at La Muedra, lunch at a Molinos de Duero inn, swim in the Duero next to the reservoir, ride back via Salduero. With an extra night: a short ride to the Río Lobos Canyon the next day.

Frequently asked questions
Is a mountain bike necessary for the Laguna Negra?
No, a gravel bike will handle almost the entire route. Only the last km to the parking lot at the viewpoint has loose gravel where an MTB performs better.
Can you go in winter?
Black Lagoon may be snowed or frozen between December and March. It’s a spectacular scene but the slopes are closed or impassable for biking.
Are there bike rentals in Vinuesa?
Yes, in the village and in rural accommodations. Book in advance for September-October (high mushroom season).
How to get there without a car?
Bus from Soria to Vinuesa with several daily frequencies. From Madrid, direct bus to Soria and transfer.
What wildlife can you see?
Griffon vultures, roe deer, red deer during the rut (September-October) and, with luck, otter in the rivers. The Iberian wolf is present but unseen.
Mushroom picking permit?
Yes, in public mountains. You purchase it online at micocyl.es: 5 €/day for recreational gathering. In private mountains, you need authorization from the owner.
