§02 — The place

Adventure in the morning, calm for the rest.

A weekend here means arriving in a small valley that doesn’t appear in travel reports, descending into a cave with a local guide in the morning, enjoying a traditional cocido in a family-run guesthouse that’s been serving for decades, and ending the weekend with a vermouth by the sea in Laredo before Monday. Rhythm: adventure in the morning, calm for the rest of the day.

  4. 04

    1 hour from Bilbao

As close as a weekend getaway, as intimate as avoiding tourists in swimwear.

Adventure

The active side: guided or self-guided activities, no sugar-coating the gradient.

Caving in Coventosa or Cullalvera

Venture into one of the most explored karst systems on the Iberian Peninsula. The Coventosa Cave was one of the first large cavities mapped in Spain in the late 19th century, and new galleries are still being discovered today. A guided introductory tour lasting approximately 3 hours with headlamp, helmet and overalls — suitable for beginners, no prior experience necessary, only a requirement not to be claustrophobic.

Canyoning in the Hayas River

Four hours of short jumps, rappels, natural slides and pools carved by water in one of the emblematic canyons of the valley. Technical material (wetsuit, helmet, harness) is provided by the guide. Swimming ability recommended; not suitable for those with vertigo. Best between June and September due to water temperature.

Kayak ride on the Limpias estuary

The navigable descent of the lower Asón: three hours gently drifting from Limpias to where the river opens into the Cantabrian Sea. A friendly stretch, ideal for beginners and hot days. Equipment and guide included.

Hiking to the Asón Waterfall

Balcony path with privileged views of the waterfall and valley. Variable route depending on your mood: short one-hour path to the viewpoint, or a complete three-hour circular route through the karst. You walk among beech forests, Pasiego meadows and limestone formations. Suitable for families with older children.

Culture & heritage

What makes this place different: heritage, crafts, local history.

Covalanas Caves (cave art)

One hour inside the cave with an official guide, discovering deer paintings made 20,000 years ago using the tampon technique: ochre applied dot by dot with the fingertips. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Online reservation required, very limited spaces.

Karst Interpretation Center (Ramales)

To understand why eastern Cantabria is the birthplace of Spanish speleology. Scale models of underground systems, a history of explorations since the 19th century, immersive videos and technical material on display. Good for rainy days and suitable for families.

Pasiego villages in the valley

A leisurely tour through the towns that shaped the valley: Arredondo, Ramales, Soba, Lanestosa. Traditional stone and wood architecture, Pasiego cabins scattered across the pastures, modest churches with austere bell towers. Allow plenty of time and bring your camera.

Food & drink

Eating well without the manual - local product, village pace.

Featured

Mountain stew at an inn

The valley’s signature dish: white beans with kale, chorizo, black pudding and ribs, slow-cooked. Family-run inns in Arredondo and Ramales serve it at lunchtime. A single dish: you’ll eat – and have dinner, if you like – with this.

Tresviso Cheese and Santoña Anchovies

Local product with D.O.: the blue cheese from Tresviso matured in caves, the Santoña anchovies in artisanal preserves and Pasiego sobaos as a sweet ending. Available in inns, village shops and restaurants in the valley.

Snack on a terrace with anchovies in Laredo

Finish with a taste of the sea: a snack on a terrace in Old Puebla de Laredo. Cantabrian anchovies, fried squid, mussels and a homemade refreshment. Best enjoyed before lunch (12:00–13:30) or late in the afternoon.

Where to sleep

Where you sleep - inns, rural houses, hotels with character in the valley.

Featured

Rural guesthouse in Arredondo

Family-run stone and wood guesthouse in the heart of the valley, in Arredondo (town hall capital). Cozy rooms, breakfast with local produce and the feeling of being in a home that has been welcoming travelers for decades. Some accept pets (please inquire).

Rural house in Soba (groups)

Entire country house with 4-6 bedrooms, equipped kitchen and garden. Ideal for groups of friends or large families who want independence. Views of the valley, woodshed and porch for long meals.

Premium country hotel

If you’re looking for comfort: rural hotel with SPA, its own restaurant and attentive service. More expensive than guesthouses but perfect for couples on a romantic getaway. Rooms with balconies overlooking the valley.

Nature

Landscape unfiltered: what you see on foot, without the car.

Featured

Asón Waterfall (viewpoint)

The iconic view of the valley: 50 meters of drop between vertical limestone walls. Accessible balcony viewpoint with a car ride plus a short 15-minute walk. Spectacular in spring and after the rains; it loses flow in high summer but the surroundings remain amazing at any time.

Asón Spring (route)

Hiking route to the source of the river, where water springs directly from the rock. Three hours round trip from Brenavinto, in the Soba valley, among beech forests and Pasiego meadows with scattered stone cabins. Medium difficulty, huge reward.

Pools and bends of the river

River stretches with natural pools carved by the water, ideal for cooling off in summer. Access is from several points in the valley (Arredondo, Ramales). No facilities — pure nature, offering only stones and the current.

30-60 min away

Half-hour side trips if you've time left or it rains.

Laredo (Old Town + La Salvé)

Old Town is the medieval quarter of Laredo, with cobbled streets, baroque mansions and the Gothic church of Santa María. La Salvé is the long 4 km beach of fine sand where you can end the day with a stroll and a snack on a terrace. 25 minutes by car from the valley.

Santoña (anchovies + Marshes)

Anchovies at source: the canneries are visited by prior appointment, there is a shop. And the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Reserve: wetlands of international importance for migratory birds. Easily combined in half a day.

Castro Urdiales (castle-lighthouse)

Medieval coastal town with the most photographed monumental complex on the Cantabrian coast: castle-lighthouse on the rock, Gothic church of Santa María and fishing harbor below. 40 min from the valley. Ideal for a quiet afternoon or sunset.

Santoña Marshes (birdwatching)

The Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Reserve is one of the most important wetlands in the Iberian Peninsula: more than 130 species of birds, including migratory and nesting ones. It can be explored from several marked observatories. Best season: autumn and winter.

More practical details

Physical level & requirements

Moderate fitness level. For canyoning: ability to swim and no fear of heights. For beginner caving: no claustrophobia. Hiking is suitable for families.

How to get there

Best time: June–September for comfortable temperatures and mild water (perfect for canyoning, kayaking, and swimming in natural pools). The Asón waterfall is most powerful in spring and after autumn rains; it tends to weaken in peak summer, but the valley’s climate and water more than make up for it. Bring hiking boots, clothes that can get wet, and a headlamp if entering caves. Technical activities (caving, canyoning, kayaking) must always be done with a certified local guide.

Recommendations

Combine the valley’s adventure with a day at the coast: Castro Urdiales, Laredo, or the sanctuary of Santoña are just 30–40 minutes away. And don’t leave without tasting the mountain-style cocido and sobao pasiego at a local guesthouse in the Asón Valley.
§07 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior experience?

No. Beginner-friendly routes are designed for newcomers with a guide. Only moderate fitness is required, and no fear of heights or claustrophobia depending on the activity.

Can I go with children?

Yes. Family-friendly caving and hiking are suitable from age 8–10. Canyoning and kayaking usually require ages 12–14+. Check with each operator.

How much does a 2-night getaway cost?

Between €220 and €380 per person, depending on accommodation and number of guided activities. Rural guesthouses range from €60–90 per night for a double room.

How do I get here without a car?

Difficult. The most realistic option is taking a bus to Ramales or Ampuero from Santander or Bilbao, then arranging pickup by the guesthouse or guide. Having your own car greatly eases travel between activities.
