Adventure in the morning, calm for the rest.
Why it stands out
- 01
Spanish cradle of speleology
More than a century mapping the karst systems of the valley: Coventosa, Cullalvera, Cubío de la Bañada. This is where the country’s speleologists are trained.
- 02
The Asón Waterfall
Fifty meters of descent between vertical limestone walls. Spectacular after rainfall or in spring, photogenic all year round.
- 03
Small valley, not overcrowded
No lines, no crowds, no resort. Family-run guesthouses, local guides and the feeling of discovering something others don’t know.
- 04
1 hour from Bilbao
As close as a weekend getaway, as intimate as avoiding tourists in swimwear.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need prior experience?
No. Beginner-friendly routes are designed for newcomers with a guide. Only moderate fitness is required, and no fear of heights or claustrophobia depending on the activity.
Can I go with children?
Yes. Family-friendly caving and hiking are suitable from age 8–10. Canyoning and kayaking usually require ages 12–14+. Check with each operator.
How much does a 2-night getaway cost?
Between €220 and €380 per person, depending on accommodation and number of guided activities. Rural guesthouses range from €60–90 per night for a double room.
How do I get here without a car?
Difficult. The most realistic option is taking a bus to Ramales or Ampuero from Santander or Bilbao, then arranging pickup by the guesthouse or guide. Having your own car greatly eases travel between activities.
