Riding at the foot of a 13th-century wall
Why it stands out
- 01
One of Spain's best-preserved medieval towns
Morella preserves 2.5 km of wall with 14 towers and a 13th-century castle visible from 30 km away. It is listed as one of Spain's most beautiful villages.
- 02
Two natural parks within 30 minutes
Els Ports to the west (Spanish ibex, relict beech woods) and Tinença de Benifassà to the north (centuries-old holm-oak forests). Waymarked trails and little pressure mid-week.
- 03
Maestrazgo black truffle and rural markets
The Maestrazgo is one of Spain's main producers of black truffle (Tuber melanosporum). December-March is the season; you'll find it on local menus and at the FITRUF fair.
- 04
Altitude that softens the summer
With the town at 1,000 m, August highs rarely exceed 28-30°C and nights drop to 15°C. An alternative to the heat of the Valencian coast without going far from it.

How to get there
Best time: May to October. The altitude (1,000 m) softens summer. In winter it can snow and drop below zero at night.
Getting there: Morella is 110 km from Castellón via the CV-10 motorway and N-232; 200 km from Valencia (~2.5 h); 100 km from Vinaròs and the coast. No train; car or direct bus from Castellón and Vinaròs.
What to bring: long trousers, closed shoes with a small heel, windproof jacket (even in summer mornings are cool). Helmets provided by the riding centre.

Frequently asked questions
What experience do I need?
None. The offer is beginner rides with a guide, at walk and gentle trot. If you ride already, ask the centre for longer routes or uneven terrain.
When can I ride?
May to October with stable weather. In winter (December-February) there are days of snow and frost; many centres reduce activity.
Can I get there without a car?
There's a bus from Castellón and Vinaròs, but it doesn't run often. Once in Morella, everything is 10-30 minutes by car; renting one is the easiest option.
Do I need riding gear?
No. The riding centre provides the helmet and usually everything else. You bring long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel.
Is it a good plan for kids?
Yes from 6-7 years old, lead-rein with a guide. For younger children, some centres offer short pony rides and farm-school plans.
