Valley wine, 28-degree thermal water, river at sunrise
Why it stands out
- 01
Thermal waters with public-utility status
The Hervideros spring was declared of public utility in 1902. The spa has run since 1908. It's not a marketing spa — it's medicinal mineral water with a century of documented use.
- 02
Three wine denominations within an hour
Few places in Spain bring together DO Utiel-Requena (Bobal), DO Manchuela (Bobal and Cencibel) and DO Almansa (Garnacha Tintorera) within an hour's drive. Real comparative tastings, not a marketing pitch.
- 03
Navigable river canyon 10 minutes away
The Júcar cruise (Cofrentes to Cortes de Pallás, 2 hours) enters a limestone canyon with cliffs near 100 metres. One of the few motorised inland river experiences on the Iberian peninsula.
- 04
Two rivers meeting under a medieval castle
The Cofrentes Castle commands the point where the Cabriel flows into the Júcar — a dramatic geography uncommon inland. Lit at night, it's visible from almost anywhere in the village.
Who it fits
Fits if: you mix thermal wellness with food-and-wine interest, prefer a rural village over a resort, and have time (minimum one night to make the spa worthwhile). Works for 40+ couples, groups of friends, senior escapes. Also good for drivers from Valencia wanting to overnight.
Doesn't fit if: you want Michelin-grade dining (this is local village cooking, not author cuisine), travel with very young children (spa has age limits), or look for beach or nightlife. For wine plus an intensive vinotherapy spa see Mainetes in Albacete; for mountain wine see Liébana.

How to get there
Best season: spring (March-June) and autumn (September-November). Summer works but it's dry-hot (95°F+). Winter is mild enough for the spa; Júcar river cruises run depending on flow.
Getting there: car essential. Valencia 1h30 via A-3 + N-330; Albacete 1h via N-322; Madrid 3h30 via A-3.
Gear: swimwear, flip-flops, robe (some hotels provide), a layer for evenings even in summer, closed flat shoes for wineries and castle.
Booking: spa and Júcar cruise 1-2 weeks ahead; in July-August and holidays a month ahead. Small wineries require advance phone call.
Recommendations
For one night, prioritise spa plus winery and skip the Júcar cruise (it eats half a day with the drive). For two nights, all three fit comfortably. Book the cruise before 11am to avoid afternoon wind. Eat in village restaurants (not the spa one, which is functional) — order gazpacho manchego, gachas or ajoarriero, with a young Bobal red from Manchuela. The Cofrentes Castle is lit at night; worth a walk from the spa.

Frequently asked questions
Is it accessible for seniors with reduced mobility?
The spa and the Júcar river cruise, yes. The Medieval Castle involves 200 steps and is not accessible. Most family wineries have stairs; it’s advisable to warn them when booking.
Can I visit the spa without staying at the hotel?
Yes, Hotel Balneario Hervideros sells day passes to the thermal circuit. There are other rural accommodations in the area; many have special pricing agreements with the spa.
When does the Júcar cruise operate?
From March to November, subject to river flow. Departs from the Cofrentes pier and lasts approximately 2 hours. Advance booking recommended, especially on weekends.
Are there wineries with tastings and guided tours nearby?
Yes, mainly from DO Utiel-Requena and DO Manchuela. Most are family-run and take appointments; the rural hotel where you stay can manage the reservation.
Is it a good destination with kids?
Children over 8-10 years old, yes (cruise, castle, walks). The spa’s thermal circuit has a minimum age requirement — confirm directly with the establishment.
How many days do you recommend?
2 nights is the ideal format: day 1 spa + winery, day 2 Júcar cruise + castle, day 3 return. With 1 night you have to choose between cruise or winery.
