§02 — The place

A valley that still remembers the bears.

You cycle effortlessly along the tracks of a former mining railway, between rock walls and tunnels where the air suddenly turns cool. The Trubia River accompanies you below, vultures soar above, and at some point, you stop in front of the enclosure of the Asturias Bear Foundation. Here bears aren’t just for show: they are the reason this valley decided to take care of itself. And that shows in every kilometer.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

    Almost flat

Following a railway track, the slope is minimal. Children, grandparents and anyone who hasn't been on a bike for years can enjoy it without struggling.

  2. 02

    Truth tunnels

They aren’t just for show: you cross real mine tunnels dug into the rock, lit up where the temperature drops suddenly. Little ones especially love that part.

  3. 03

    Bears with a cause

The enclosure of the Asturias Bear Foundation is not a zoo: it’s a conservation center for the Cantabrian brown bear. Visiting it is understanding why this valley protects its wildlife.

  4. 04

    Logistics solved.

The shuttle service returns you to the starting point without having to pedal back. You go downhill, and the car is where you left it.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Ecotourism Family Accessible
It’s a good fit if you're coming with family and little ones, with grandparents who want an e-bike without any risks, or as a couple looking for a quiet day in nature. It’s ideal for those who haven't cycled in a while: the terrain is forgiving.

It’s not a good fit if you're looking for physical challenge, kilometers of uphill climbs or adrenaline: there are no steep slopes or technical excitement here. This route is for enjoying the scenery, not training.

More practical details

Physical level & requirements

Very low difficulty. The route is practically flat, along an old railway line, with no significant hills. Suitable for all ages, including young children and seniors, especially with e-bikes. No prior experience or physical fitness is required.

How to get there

Bikes and e-bikes: local rental companies offer bikes of all sizes (from 14"), e-bikes, trailers and baby seats. E-bikes are helpful on longer stretches.

Shuttle service: the shuttle service returns users to their starting point, allowing you to ride downhill without pedaling back up.

Best time to visit: from spring to autumn. Summer is popular; autumn paints the forests copper and there are fewer people.

Accessibility: paved, flat surface, comfortable for all ages and those traveling with children. The tunnels are lit.

Recommendations

Book the bike and shuttle in advance for holidays and summer, as it gets crowded. Bring a light layer even if it’s sunny: it gets cool inside the tunnels. For lunch, the villages in the valley have authentic Asturian cuisine. And set aside time for the House of the Bear in Proaza: it explains the history of the Cantabrian bear very well.
