Picuco treks and expeditions

Several days of adventure across Spain, with logistics sorted, in whatever way you choose

A trek is a multi-day journey strung together across a territory: walking refuge to refuge, paddling the coast by kayak, riding between villages or cycling a mountain range. The medium changes; what doesn't is that we handle the logistics so you only have to enjoy it. Each Picuco trek or expedition includes a certified guide, reserved lodging (refuge, rural house or whatever fits), transfers at start and end, and a pre-trip briefing with recommended gear and real difficulty.

Our catalogue goes beyond classic trekking. On foot: Anillo de Picos and Travesera Integral in Picos de Europa, GR-11 by stages and Carros de Foc in the Pyrenees, the Sierra Nevada integral. By kayak and boat: coastal crossings and life aboard a schooner. On horseback: multi-day equestrian routes, like the Ribera del Duero. By bike: cycling and mountain biking across the Serra de Tramuntana or the Empordà. And private expeditions with bespoke itineraries.

We run two formats. Open treks with set dates, small groups, designed for solo or paired travellers who want to meet companions at a similar level. And private expeditions for closed groups (friends, family, clubs or companies) with itineraries tailored to your pace, level and number of nights. Prices barely change between formats: the guide is the same, only the group is different.

For classic treks we have set combos you book directly. If what you're after isn't listed (a specific alta ruta, a kayak crossing along a particular coast, a horseback route or a classic ascent like Naranjo or Aneto), tell us dates, group level and constraints: we send a proposal with all the details and a closed price within 24 h. No commitment until you say yes.

Frequently asked questions

¿Tienes dudas?

What is the best Picos de Europa route over several days?
For 4 days, the Anillo de Picos through refuges (Vegarredonda, Vega de Urriellu, Cabaña Veronica, Vegabaño). For 5 to 6 days, the Travesera Integral crossing the three massifs. For beginners, the Cares route plus Lagos de Covadonga plus an ascent to Peña Santa over 3 days. We advise based on real level, not marketing.
How many days do I need for a full trek?
Three days for a short trek (one massif or a stretch of GR), 4 to 5 for a classic like Anillo de Picos or Carros de Foc, 6 to 7 for integrals or long GR-11 stages. We always tell the truth about daily elevation and pace: a badly calibrated trek is the worst possible experience.
What level do I need to join a guided trek?
We label the required level per trek: beginner (no prior experience, 4 to 5 hours a day, gentle elevation), intermediate (8 to 12 km, up to 800 metres of positive elevation per stage), high (alpine, mountain autonomy, possible grade II passages). If you are unsure, we honestly tell you whether you fit. Better to say no than ruin the week.
What is the difference between a trek and an expedition?
A trek is multi-day hiking on known and consolidated terrain, with manned refuges and trails. An expedition is more demanding: more committing or high-mountain terrain, more autonomy, technical gear, no manned refuge for part of the route. At Picuco most are treks; expeditions require intermediate to high level and prior experience.
When is the best time for a trek in Spain?
Picos de Europa: June to October (July and August refuges fill up, book ahead). Pirineos: July to September for alta ruta, June and October for lower zones. Sierra Nevada: June to October. Full GR-11: July and August. Southern sierras (Cazorla, lower Sierra Nevada): spring and autumn to avoid the heat.
How many days do I need to see Picos de Europa on foot?
For a complete overview, 5 to 7 days. The Anillo de Picos (4 days) covers the three massifs through refuges and hits the essentials. To settle in the area, sleeping in Sotres or Arenas de Cabrales and doing day routes lets you see villages and eat well. For beginners, 3 days are enough (Cares route, Lagos de Covadonga, gentle ascent).
Is the Anillo de Picos de Europa difficult?
Medium to high level. Daily stages of 5 to 7 hours, 800 to 1,200 metres of positive elevation per stage, mountain terrain with occasional passages requiring sure footing. No technical gear needed (it is not climbing), but fitness is required. Better suited to people who have done full-day mountain hikes before.
Can the GR-11 be done in sections?
Yes, that is the most common approach. The full GR-11 (Roncesvalles to Cabo de Higuer) has 38 stages and takes 35-45 days. Classic sections: Navarrese Pirineo (5 days, gentle), Central Aragón (Selva de Oza to Benasque, 7 days, high), Catalonia (Andorra to Cabo de Higuer, 10 days). We help you choose the section based on level.
Guided or self-supported trek? Which works better?
Self-supported demands full autonomy: booking refuges months in advance (Vega de Urriellu and Cabaña Verónica fill up), reading maps, managing food, evaluating weather. Guided offloads that work: the guide books, knows alternative routes if weather turns, and brings technical safety in demanding passages. First time we recommend guided; with experience, self-supported works well.
What goes in a backpack for a 5-day trek through Picos?
Backpack 40-50L. Broken-in mountain boots (don't bring fresh ones). Refuge sheet sack (no full sleeping bag needed, refuges provide blankets). Layered clothing: thermal, fleece, waterproof shell, trekking trousers. Headlamp, knife, basic first aid kit, sun cream, minimum 2L water. Trekking poles optional but recommended for long descents. We send a full checklist before departure.
