§02 — The place

The mountain passes you dream of in winter, under your wheels.

Mallorca isn’t a cycling destination by chance. The Serra de Tramuntana concentrates in just a few kilometers the roads that half a professional peloton uses to prepare for the season: the impossible loop of Sa Calobra, the long fourteen kilometers towards Puig Major, the quiet hairpin turns of Coll de Sóller. You don’t have to invent epic moments here. You climb, you suffer just enough, and at the top the Mediterranean rewards you. This is about truly pedaling, not taking a picture.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

    Sa Calobra’s tie knot

About 5.9 miles at an average of 7% with a loop of 270° that passes under itself. It’s the most photographed cycling road in Mallorca, and riding it is something else.

  2. 02

The roof of Mallorca by road

Puig Major measures 1,445 m, but the bike road reaches about 850 m at the Monnàber tunnel: the real summit is a military zone. Even so, it’s about 14 km at 6% from Sóller, the longest ascent on the island.

  3. 03

    Technical roads with little traffic

Coll de Sóller has almost 30 hairpin turns on the north side and hardly any cars since the tunnel took away the traffic in the 90s. Tramuntana is an open-air test circuit.

  4. 04

Cycling climate from February to October

The best time to visit is spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October): 18-25°C, cool mornings and little rain. That’s why half a professional cycling team prepares for the season here.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection
This is for those who already ride road bikes with a good base and want real climbs, not leisurely rides. If you do long rides at home and aren’t intimidated by 9-10% gradients or technical descents with lots of curves, this is for you. If you’re looking for a relaxed cycling tour, it's better to check out our shorter or gravel options: the Tramuntana rewards fitness but also demands it.

Physical level & requirements

Designed for road cyclists with a good base level of fitness. The stages involve several long climbs and technical descents. It is advisable to be trained for rides lasting several hours and comfortable with gradients of up to 9-10% and tight hairpin bends.

How to get there

Best time to go: February to May and September to October. Spring (April-May) is peak cycling season; summer gets very hot, and it’s best to start early. Usual bases: Port de Pollença, Alcúdia and Sóller are the classic towns to stay in, well connected with the ports. Type of bike: road bike for the classic ports; gravel if you want sections through estates in the Tramuntana mountains. Logistics: local guide and support vehicle on guided tours; accommodation with services for cyclists.

Recommendations

Pack layers: mornings in the Serra are cool even if the day is warm, and long descents get chilly. Stay well hydrated on long climbs like Puig Major. If you go in spring or summer, set off early: the midday heat and tourist traffic from May onwards are noticeable on the most popular routes.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long is Sa Calobra really?

About 5.9 miles from the port to Coll dels Reis, with an average gradient of around 7% and ramps reaching 12-14% just after the famous hairpin bend. It accumulates about 2,165-2,300 feet of elevation gain.

Can you cycle up Puig Major to the summit?

The real peak (1,445 m) is a military zone with restricted access. Road bikes can go up to about 850 m at the Monnàber tunnel, after around 14 km with a 6% gradient from Sóller. It’s the longest ascent in Mallorca.

What level do I need to be?

Road cyclist profile. You don’t need to be a professional, but you should be comfortable with long rides, gradients of 9-10% and descents with lots of curves. We will adapt the route to your level as much as possible.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October): temperatures of 18-25°C, little rain and fresh mornings. In summer you can ride early to avoid the heat.

Is it necessary to bring your own bike?

It’s not essential. Guided tours can include or manage road bike rental, in addition to support vehicle and mechanics. If you prefer your own bike, you can bring it too.
