§02 — The place

Cycle where the light turned surreal.

The Empordà is best explored at a leisurely pace by bike: the tramontana wind pushes you along among vineyards and wheat fields, stone villages appear around every bend, and suddenly you understand why Dalí didn’t paint dreams but what he saw. Secondary roads with no traffic, coves earned by effort, and a horizon of cypress trees and sea. There’s no rush here: just the click of gears changing and the next medieval village waiting.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

Art and landscape on the same handlebar

This isn’t a bike route with filler museums: the landscape you cycle through is literally the one Dalí painted. Cap de Creus, Portlligat and the Empordà plain explain his work better than any audio guide.

  2. 02

    Three lands, one region

Quiet road, gravel among vineyards and mountain bike trails coexist within just a few kilometers. You choose the surface according to your level and desire, and the region allows it without major travel.

  3. 03

Stone villages every few strokes of the pedal.

The Baix Empordà region concentrates one of the highest densities of medieval towns in Catalonia. Peratallada, Pals or Monells appear as natural landmarks between stages, not as separate excursions.

  4. 04

    Logistics designed for light travel.

Accommodation, support vehicle and prepared bikes mean you only have to worry about pedaling. The e-bike option opens the region up to groups with mixed levels.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection
It’s a good fit if you enjoy cycling for several days in a row and want to combine sport with culture and scenery, without taking on an extreme journey. It’s not for those looking only for the beach or those who have never done routes lasting several hours: there’s elevation gain, kilometers and, some days, a headwind. An e-bike opens it up to mixed levels; with a regular bike, it’s best to come prepared. If you want museums without physical effort, this isn't the format for you.

Physical level & requirements

A moderate level of fitness is required: stages lasting several hours with accumulated elevation gain and some technical mountain biking sections. If using a regular bike, it’s advisable to cycle regularly before the trip. An e-bike significantly reduces the demands and allows participation for those who don’t usually train, although it still requires confident bike handling.

How to get there

Best time to go: spring and autumn are ideal (mild temperatures, less crowded). Summer means heat and the Costa Brava is very busy; it’s advisable to start early. Tramontana: a characteristic north wind in the area, especially near Cap de Creus. The Montgrí massif offers some shelter. It’s advisable to check the forecast and plan stages exposed to the wind with it at your back. Bicycles: mountain bikes, gravel bikes and e-bikes are available for rent; e-bikes level the playing field in mixed groups. Helmet mandatory. A prior check and basic repair kit are recommended.

Recommendations

Book well in advance for spring and autumn, the most popular seasons. If you come in summer, plan long stages early in the day. Bring windproof clothing for the tramontana and sunscreen even on cloudy days. If your group has different fitness levels, an e-bike will prevent anyone from being left behind. And leave room to stop: the medieval villages and the coves of Cap de Creus require time, not just passing through.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to be an experienced cyclist?

No, but it’s common to cycle for several hours. With a regular bike, it's best to be in good shape; with an e-bike, intermediate levels are manageable.

MTB, gravel or road?

The region allows for all three modalities. The routes combine rural roads, greenways and secondary roads; the terrain adapts to your level and your bike.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn: mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer is doable if you get an early start, but it's hot and the coast gets crowded.

What about the Tramuntana winds?

It’s a common northerly wind. Stages are planned taking it into account and making the most of shelter from the Montgrí when it’s strong.

Can I rent an e-bike?

Yes. The e-bike is available and it’s the ideal option for groups with mixed levels or to enjoy the landscape without struggling with the elevation.
