§02 — The place

Pedalling where the Pyrenees still echo in Aranese

You leave Vielha at dawn, 974 metres above sea level, the Garona flowing on your right. You'll climb long passes, cross alpine meadows and drop into stone villages where the last frontier is linguistic. Four days of self-guided cycling with logistics sorted: GPX loaded, lodging and bag transfer waiting at the end of each stage. You bring the legs. The valley brings the landscape and the silence.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

    Truly solved logistics

GPX files uploaded, accommodations booked, luggage transfer between stages and all-day telephone assistance. You arrive, leave your suitcase, and find it at the next accommodation the following day.

  2. 02

    Val d'Aran, the Atlantic Pyrenees

The only valley in the Pyrenees facing north. Green meadows, abundant rivers, an Atlantic microclimate and Aranese as an official language. It’s the Pyrenees you don't expect: more alpine and less Mediterranean.

  3. 03

    Mythical cycling passes of Europe

Bonaigua (2,072 m), Port del Cantó (1,721 m), Vielha tunnel (5.2 km). Wide roads, light traffic outside of August, and the feeling of cycling along the verges where the history of the Tour and the Vuelta was made.

  4. 04

For cyclists with a foundation, no filters.

We don’t market this as a family route. These are crossings of 60-90 km daily with serious elevation gains. In return, the route curation and accommodations are on a level befitting someone who has been cycling for years.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection Local Life

You fit if you ride several days a year, you're comfortable with a GPX, and you enjoy long days on the bike: 60-90 km and 1,000-1,800 m of climbing are the norm. Solo, with a partner, or with a couple of mates — the logistics let everyone keep their own pace.

Not your place if you want a guide riding next to you all day (this is self-guided, with phone backup), if you're travelling with kids (better look at our family cycling getaways), or if your idea is urban cycling with long café stops.

Ascent to the Port de la Bonaigua (2,072 m) from the Aran side: 26 km of continuous ascent, average gradients of 4-5%, technical descent towards Pallars Sobirà. Wide road, little traffic outside of August.

§06 — The practical side

Trek practicalities

Summer · Autumn
Fitness level
Moderate
Typical length

More practical details

Physical level & requirements

Medium-high fitness. Typical stages of 50-90 km with 800 to 1,800 m of positive climbing. Prior mountain riding experience required, and comfort on technical descents if going by MTB. No need to be a licensed cyclist: consistent weekend training over the 2-3 months prior is enough.

How to get there

Best season: June to October. May is possible if the snowmelt allows (Bonaigua may hold snow into early June). November to May the high passes are usually closed or risky.

Getting there: Vielha is ~3 h by car from Barcelona (N-230 + Vielha tunnel), 4 h from Zaragoza, 6 h from Madrid. Reference airports: Toulouse (~2 h crossing the French border) and Barcelona. Bus service from Barcelona and Lleida (Alsa).

Own bike or rental: packages include a bike (full-suspension MTB or gravel) if you need one. If you bring yours, bike racks are available on transfers.

Recommended kit: helmet (mandatory), lights for long stages, layers (2,000 m is cool even in August), gloves, GPS computer or phone with GPS and mount. Summer: sunscreen and at least 2 bottles.

Recommendations

If you've never done a multi-day cycling tour, start with a 3-night option before jumping to a 5-7-night one. Central stages tend to be the toughest; save legs for day 2 or 3.

To see Val d'Aran at its most alive, try to coincide with the summer solstice festival (Es Halhes) in late June: UNESCO-listed bonfires. In September, the meadows lose the August crowds and forests start to turn.

Book early: rural lodging in the area has limited capacity and July-August fills weeks in advance.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own bike or do you provide one?

Your call. Each package lets you choose: bike included (full-suspension MTB or gravel depending on the route) or bring yours with a discount on the price.

Self-guided means I ride alone?

You ride at your own pace, yes, but with the GPX preloaded, a previous briefing and 24/7 phone support during the tour. Lodging and luggage transfer are booked and waiting at every stage end.

What if I can't finish a stage?

You call support and they pick you and the bike up. Covered in all packages at no extra cost, up to 1 pickup per person per tour.

Are there pure road routes or all MTB?

Both. Road hubs focus on Bonaigua, Cantó and Tour climbs. MTB hubs explore Alt Pirineu trails, greenways and singletrack.

Can I go with kids?

These tours are for adults with prior experience. For families with little ones we have other proposals in our family cycling hubs with shorter, flatter stages.

How much climbing per stage?

Between 800 and 1,800 m positive per day depending on the route. Tours are staged: easier opening days to find rhythm, central days with the big climbs.
