One backpack, twelve days, no hotel.
Why it stands out
- 01
Pyrenean border ridge
More than 150 km of balcony path following the border line, with alternating views of the French Pyrenees and the valleys on the Spanish side.
- 02
Sheltered refuges as the only logistics.
Bed, blanket and half-board in shelters of FAM-FEDME. No tent, no sleeping bag, no support vehicle. The classic organization for hiking in the Pyrenees.
- 03
The most classic section of the GR-11
The Candanchú-Salardú crossing is the iconic section: documented in a hundred guides, walked by thousands. Ideal for a first great Pyrenean crossing.
- 04
Ten days without a car

How to get there
Access
Start: Candanchú (Huesca). Arrive by bus from Jaca or by car. Finish: Salardú (Lérida). Return to start via private transport (included in some packages).
Minimum Equipment
Walking boots, 35–40L backpack, sleeping bag liner, headlamp, layered technical clothing, lightweight hat and gloves. Walking poles recommended.
Recommendations
Book at least 3 months in advance — huts fill up in July and August. Don’t underestimate altitude: spending two nights in Candanchú or the lower Pyrenees before starting greatly improves performance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need prior experience?
Yes — at least one week of accumulated high-altitude hiking in Spain or equivalent. The route isn’t technical, but the physical strain is real.
When can this be done?
Mid-June to mid-September. Earlier, high passes still have snow; later, huts close.
What backpack weight should I expect?
10–12 kg with sleeping bag, clothing, daily water, and snacks. Most meals are eaten in huts.
Is there a self-guided option?
Yes — you’ll receive GPX tracks, hut reservations, and a detailed stage-by-stage guide. Recommended only if you have prior experience.
