Picos de Europa Circuit
El Anillo de Picos de Europa is the circular trek across the guarded mountain huts of the Picos range. It exists in three official modalities: Vindio (4 days, Western Massif), Tres Macizos (7 days, hard) and Extrem (9 days, very hard). One network of 9 huts, one tradition.

One network, nine refugios, three ways to walk it.
Why it stands out
- 01
Three modes for three levels
Vindio, Three Massifs, Extremadura. The park rangers themselves recommend starting at Vindio before heading up to Central. Picuco helps you choose based on your previous experience.
- 02
Official network, not operator route.
It’s a federated system maintained by the wardens of the nine shelters, not invented by a company. Picuco handles logistics (reservations + transfers), but not the route itself.
- 03
Cabaña Verónica, 7,628 ft, 18 beds
The most iconic shelter in the system, nestled right into the wall of the Central Massif. It’s only available on the Three Massifs and Extrem routes. Making a reservation is the hardest part of the Ring.
- 04
Official passport stamped on the road.
Three euros to purchase at the start. Each refuge stamps it with your arrival time. Once completed, the Ring is achieved.

How to get there
Best Time to Go
July to mid-September, when the mountain huts are open and the snow has melted in the high passes. In June there may be hard snow on Horcados Rojos and other passes above 2,200 m – not suitable without an ice axe and crampons.
Reservations
The huts fill up well in advance. Cabaña Verónica (18 beds) needs to be booked several months ahead. Vega de Urriellu, Vegarredonda and Vega de Ario are the same during weekends in July-August.
Equipment
Sleeping bag liner (the huts provide blankets), category B hiking boots, trekking poles, headlamp with spare batteries, waterproof jacket and windproof jacket, change of clothes, hat and light gloves. Camera for photos from Horcados Rojos to Cabaña Verónica.
Recommendations
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book the mountain huts?
Cabaña Verónica with a minimum of 3-4 months. Vega de Urriellu, Vegarredonda and Vega de Ario with 6-8 weeks for weekend stays in July-August. There is more availability during the week, but don’t count on last-minute bookings.
What should I pack in my backpack?
8-12 kg: sleeping bag liner, layered clothing, warm jacket, windproof jacket, headlamp, hiking boots (worn), trekking poles, small toiletries kit, basic first-aid kit, daily water supply and snacks. Small microfiber towels. The main meal is provided at the refuge.
Do I need insurance?
Yes, recommended. The FEDME federation offers affordable annual mountain insurance policies. Some shelters may ask to see a federation card or insurance upon check-in. In the event of a rescue, private individuals are responsible for the costs if they do not have coverage.
Can it be shortened?
Yes, the Vindio Ring exists and remains in the Western Massif: 4 stages, less demanding, without Cabaña Verónica. You lose the connection with the three massifs but gain accessibility.
How do I get to the starting point?
ALSA buses arrive from Madrid/Oviedo to Cangas de Onís and from León to Posada de Valdeón. From Cangas there is a seasonal bus to Lago Enol (summer). From Arenas de Cabrales, shared taxis go up to Sotres. Coordinate with us if you would like a private transfer from door-to-shelter.
