Picos de Europa Circuit

El Anillo de Picos de Europa is the circular trek across the guarded mountain huts of the Picos range. It exists in three official modalities: Vindio (4 days, Western Massif), Tres Macizos (7 days, hard) and Extrem (9 days, very hard). One network of 9 huts, one tradition.

§02 — The place

One network, nine refugios, three ways to walk it.

You leave with your pack in the morning and don't drop it until you're back in the valley. Four days if you do Vindio, seven if you do Tres Macizos, nine if you take on Extrem. You walk between karst sinkholes, climb to Cabaña Verónica if your route includes it, look at the Naranjo de Bulnes from the col and sleep on bunks next to others on the same plan. Each refuge stamps your passport and the warden notes the time. Back in Valdeón you open the passport and the stamps tell the trek without you having to say anything.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

    Three modes for three levels

Vindio, Three Massifs, Extremadura. The park rangers themselves recommend starting at Vindio before heading up to Central. Picuco helps you choose based on your previous experience.

  2. 02

    Official network, not operator route.

It’s a federated system maintained by the wardens of the nine shelters, not invented by a company. Picuco handles logistics (reservations + transfers), but not the route itself.

  3. 03

Cabaña Verónica, 7,628 ft, 18 beds

The most iconic shelter in the system, nestled right into the wall of the Central Massif. It’s only available on the Three Massifs and Extrem routes. Making a reservation is the hardest part of the Ring.

  4. 04

Official passport stamped on the road.

Three euros to purchase at the start. Each refuge stamps it with your arrival time. Once completed, the Ring is achieved.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Disconnection Photography Car-free
Built for those wanting their first major Cantabrian trek (Vindio), for fit hikers looking for a week of high-mountain hut-to-hut walking (Tres Macizos) and for mountaineers with experience in long multi-day treks (Extrem). Not the right fit for those who have never slept in a guarded refuge or done several consecutive days with a pack — for those profiles, the Cares Trail or a guided day-trek work better as an entry point.

Featured

Refuge sleeping bag liner

FAM shelters provide blankets but not sheets or sleeping bags. It is mandatory to bring a silk or fine cotton sleeping bag liner for hygiene and comfort. It weighs 200-300 g.

Mountain boots category B + trekking poles

Minimum category B footwear (high-cut, rigid sole) essential for the limestone karst. Telescopic poles highly recommended to protect knees on long descents of each stage.

Extra front and drum set

Essential for getting around the shelter at dusk (they turn off the main lights) and for stages that start before sunrise. Spare battery or pile: there is no outlet in Cabaña Verónica.

Logistics

Getting there, getting back, and internal transfers - so you only have to walk.

Physical level & requirements

Good physical condition required. Eight consecutive days carrying a backpack of 8-12 kg. Stages of 6 to 9 effective hours with accumulated gains of 800 to 1,200 m positive. No technical passages (ice axe or crampons not required in summer) but irregular karst terrain with loose stones, especially on descents. Prior experience sleeping in a mountain hut and having walked at least four consecutive days with a backpack is essential.

How to get there

Best Time to Go

July to mid-September, when the mountain huts are open and the snow has melted in the high passes. In June there may be hard snow on Horcados Rojos and other passes above 2,200 m – not suitable without an ice axe and crampons.

Reservations

The huts fill up well in advance. Cabaña Verónica (18 beds) needs to be booked several months ahead. Vega de Urriellu, Vegarredonda and Vega de Ario are the same during weekends in July-August.

Equipment

Sleeping bag liner (the huts provide blankets), category B hiking boots, trekking poles, headlamp with spare batteries, waterproof jacket and windproof jacket, change of clothes, hat and light gloves. Camera for photos from Horcados Rojos to Cabaña Verónica.

Recommendations

We recommend going counterclockwise starting from Posada de Valdeón or Sotres – the elevation gain on the first day is more manageable and you arrive at Vega de Urriellu with fresh legs. You can include a rest day in Urriellu for acclimatization or to climb Naranjo if you have it booked with a guide. Buy picnic supplies and hiking food in Cangas de Onís, Arenas de Cabrales or Posada de Valdeón BEFORE you leave – refuges only offer half-board, they don’t sell sandwiches for the trail. Bring cash: refuges do not have card payment facilities.
§07 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book the mountain huts?

Cabaña Verónica with a minimum of 3-4 months. Vega de Urriellu, Vegarredonda and Vega de Ario with 6-8 weeks for weekend stays in July-August. There is more availability during the week, but don’t count on last-minute bookings.

What should I pack in my backpack?

8-12 kg: sleeping bag liner, layered clothing, warm jacket, windproof jacket, headlamp, hiking boots (worn), trekking poles, small toiletries kit, basic first-aid kit, daily water supply and snacks. Small microfiber towels. The main meal is provided at the refuge.

Do I need insurance?

Yes, recommended. The FEDME federation offers affordable annual mountain insurance policies. Some shelters may ask to see a federation card or insurance upon check-in. In the event of a rescue, private individuals are responsible for the costs if they do not have coverage.

Can it be shortened?

Yes, the Vindio Ring exists and remains in the Western Massif: 4 stages, less demanding, without Cabaña Verónica. You lose the connection with the three massifs but gain accessibility.

How do I get to the starting point?

ALSA buses arrive from Madrid/Oviedo to Cangas de Onís and from León to Posada de Valdeón. From Cangas there is a seasonal bus to Lago Enol (summer). From Arenas de Cabrales, shared taxis go up to Sotres. Coordinate with us if you would like a private transfer from door-to-shelter.
