§02 — The place

The roof of the Pyrenees, no shortcuts.

Here are the two highest peaks in the range, Aneto and Posets, facing each other above the Benasque valley. It’s no walk in the park: it takes days of hiking above 2,500 meters, sleeping in shelters, crossing rocky and snowy passes, and descending to lakes that reflect walls that seem endless. Those who come up here aren’t just coming for a photo op. They come to be immersed in the mountains for several days running, and to leave transformed.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

    Two record-breaking three-thousanders

Few places in the Pyrenees combine both the highest peak (Aneto) and the second highest (Posets). You are on top of the mountain range, not in its vicinity.

  2. 02

    Shelter to shelter

The crossing format gets you out of the car for several days. You sleep in guarded shelters, carry only what's necessary and the mountain sets the pace, not the clock.

  3. 03

    Protected Natural Park

Posets-Maladeta is a Natural Park: glaciers, mountain lakes and alpine fauna in a landscape that is cared for, not overcrowded.

  4. 04

    Always titled guide

Above 2,500 m the route stops being a trail. A guide isn’t an extra: it's what separates a great week from a scare.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection
This is for those already experienced in mountain hiking and looking to take the leap to multi-day high mountain trekking in the Pyrenees. You’ll need good physical condition, ease walking 6-8 hours with significant elevation gain, and be comfortable sleeping in shared mountain huts. No technical climbing experience is needed for the crossings, but a good head for heights and challenging terrain is essential. If you’re looking for a comfortable trip with a hotel every night, this isn't the hub for you: here you’ll sweat and sleep high up.

§06 — The practical side

Trek practicalities

Typical length
2-7 nights
More practical details

Physical level & requirements

Demanding. Stages of 6 to 8 hours with elevation gains of 800-1,200 m day after day at altitude. You need to be in good shape and have previous experience with multi-day mountain hikes. Ascents to the three-thousand meter peaks add rocky terrain and, depending on the year, snowfields.

How to get there

Best time to go: from July to September, the only window without technical snow at high altitudes. Outside of that, the passes and peaks over 3,000 meters require winter equipment.

Base: the Benasque valley (Huesca), well connected by road. The mountain refuges (Viadós, Estós, Ángel Orús) are staffed during the season and require prior reservation.

Altitude: you usually hike and sleep above 2,000 m, with passes over 2,500 m. It’s advisable to acclimatize and respect the pace of your guide.

Recommendations

Book in advance: mountain huts get full in July and August. Bring well-worn hiking boots, technical layers and strong sun protection (it burns twice as fast at that altitude). Even in summer, pack a fleece and raincoat: afternoon storms are common and the temperature drops quickly on the passes.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience in high-mountain environments?

For hut-to-hut treks, good physical condition and previous experience in multi-day mountain hiking are sufficient. Ascents to Aneto and Posets do require more confidence on rock and snow terrain; the guide assesses the group’s level.

When can it be done?

The season runs from July to September. It’s the only window when the higher elevations are free of technical snow. Outside of those months, winter equipment and experience are required.

Where do you sleep?

In mountain huts (Viadós, Estós, Ángel Orús, depending on the route), in shared rooms with half board. Some options combine a hut stay with a hotel in Benasque at the beginning or end of your trip.

Is it mandatory to go with a guide?

For high-mountain areas, we always recommend it and our trips include it. Above a certain elevation, the route is no longer marked and the terrain and weather can change quickly.

How many days do I need?

From 2 nights for a first impression to 7 for long journeys. The classic circular route around Posets is done in 5 days (4 nights).
