§02 — The place

Andalusia at a leisurely pace — sun, greenways and white villages.

You start the day with the still-cool shade of the olive trees and end it with your back to the sun as you descend towards a white village. You cycle through old railway tunnels, cross viaducts over the Guadalporcún, hear the vultures of Peñón de Zaframagón. You climb a pass that reminds you Sierra Nevada is there. You eat at a leisurely pace on a terrace in Olvera or Zuheros. And the next day, another stage: different land, same feeling.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

The largest Greenways network in Spain.

27 itineraries add up to more than 580 km of former railway lines converted into cycle paths, with almost no slope and no traffic. Andalusia concentrates around 20% of the national total. It is the backbone of family cycling tourism and the gentlest introduction to the destination.

  2. 02

Transnevada: 450 km around a national park

Promoted by the Regional Government of Andalusia, the Transnevada divides the tour around Sierra Nevada into 8 stages (45-80 km) ranging between 1,500 and 2,000 m in altitude. Shelters like Postero Alto or Poqueira structure the nights; views of Mulhacén make up the days.

  3. 03

    Year-round cycling weather (knowing where)

Inland and coastal Andalusia is rideable practically all year round. In summer, you cycle early at lower elevations; spring and autumn are the optimal window for Greenways and white villages; June and September are the most reliable months to climb Veleta without snow or extreme heat.

  4. 04

From sea level to 3,398 m in the same destination.

Few places in the world allow you to combine a flat stage along the Mediterranean, a greenway through an olive grove, and a climb to the highest paved road in Europe in the same week. That variety of terrain—flat former railway line, rural gravel, high-mountain mountain biking, port asphalt—is Andalusia’s signature on two wheels.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection

This hub is for you if you enjoy cycling for several hours at a time, prefer the slow pace of biking to driving, like stopping for lunch in towns and sleeping in a different one each night, and want to combine scenery, heritage and a minimum of physical effort. It works very well for families on Greenways, couples in white villages, groups of friends mountain biking and road cyclists looking for high passes.

This hub is not for you if you don’t want to cycle at least 30-40 km a day, if you are looking for a sedentary trip, or if you expect a beach destination: this hub is inland and about climbing hills, even in its gentlest versions.

§05 — What you can live

What the trek includes

An editorial showcase of what the destination offers. Nothing to book here - we shape it when you write to us.

Adventure

The active side: guided or self-guided activities, no sugar-coating the gradient.

Featured

Cross-country skiing on mountain bikes.

The great mountain bike loop around Sierra Nevada: about 450 km of trails and roads surrounding the massif between 1,000 and 2,500 m. A demanding multi-day crossing through passes, forests and the southern face of Granada, designed for those seeking real disconnection and self-sufficiency on their bike.

Oil Green Route (Jaén)

About 55 km of old railway line between Jaén and the border with Córdoba, gently sloping through an endless sea of olive trees. Metal viaducts, renovated stations and a comfortable surface make it ideal for a relaxing stage with family or friends, without hard gradients but with pure olive grove scenery.

Subbética Green Way (Córdoba)

About 36 miles through the heart of Córdoba’s Subbética region, linking former stations now converted into rest areas. It runs between olive groves and limestone mountains with very gentle slopes, perfect for leisurely cycling to towns like Cabra, Doña Mencía or Luque.

Greenway of the Sierra (Cadiz)

About 22 miles between Puerto Serrano and Olvera, one of the most spectacular greenways in Spain. It crosses four illuminated tunnels and several viaducts, with Peñón de Zaframagón nearby, where one of the largest colonies of golden eagles in Europe nests. Flat and very scenic route.

Gravel through Las Alpujarras

Gravel cycling through the roads connecting the towns of Granada’s Alpujarra region, following old irrigation channels among chestnut trees and terraced fields. Constant climbs and descents, fountains in each town, and views of Sierra Nevada and the valley. A journey for those who enjoy technical terrain and a leisurely pace.

Sierra Nevada mountain passes by road

High-altitude road cycling: the climb to Las Hazallanas, one of the toughest ramps in Spain, and the ascent to Pico Veleta, the highest paved road in Europe, exceeding 3,000 m. For road cyclists seeking great climbs and fresh air above the Granada massif.

Culture & heritage

What makes this place different: heritage, crafts, local history.

Featured

Bike Route through the White Villages

Journey between Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra and Olvera, linking some of the most beautiful white villages in Cádiz. Ascend and descend among limestone mountains, castles on high and turquoise reservoirs, combining effort on the road with stops to get lost in whitewashed streets and viewpoints.

Granada cycle-cultural tour: Albaicín and Vega

A day of cycling without major hills to discover Granada from the saddle: bike lanes along the river, viewpoints towards the Alhambra, the labyrinth of the Albaicín and a ride out to the Vega among historic orchards. A blend of Andalusian heritage and agricultural landscape at the city gates.

Food & drink

Eating well without the manual - local product, village pace.

Featured

Ham stop in the Sierra de Aracena

After a stage through the mountains of Huelva, stop to recharge with acorn-fed Iberian ham from the Dehesa de Huelva, where the pigs are raised free-range. Towns like Jabugo or Aracena are world references for Iberian ham: a leisurely meal to understand the product in its own territory.

Post-route tapas in Granada

Reward at the end of the day: the classic Granada tapas, where a snack accompanies your drink without extra cost. From bar to bar in the city center and Realejo, enjoying broad beans with ham, fried eggplant with honey or fried fish, regaining energy and chatting about the day over a snack on a terrace.

Where to sleep

Where you sleep - inns, rural houses, hotels with character in the valley.

Featured

Charming guesthouse in a white village.

Accommodation in a traditional inn within a white town in Cádiz, with whitewashed walls, a patio and secure garage or storage room to keep bikes overnight. Comfortable base for stages through the Sierra de Grazalema, with a hearty breakfast before heading out and proximity to local routes.

Rural hotel in Las Alpujarras

Rural hotel in a town in the Alpujarra region of Granada, with typical architecture featuring a terrace and views of the valley or Sierra Nevada. A starting point for gravel and road cycling routes in the area, with space for bikes and local home-style cooking to recharge after a day’s climbs.

Nature

Landscape unfiltered: what you see on foot, without the car.

Featured

Northern Seville by Bike

Cycling through the Natural Park of Sierra Norte de Sevilla, with its short greenway of about 17 km as the main route and a network of paths crossing the holm oak forest. Oaks, Iberian pigs foraging in the pastureland and towns like Cazalla or Constantina set a peaceful pace among Mediterranean woodland.

Doñana perimeter by bicycle

Ride through the trails and paths surrounding Doñana, among marshes, pine forests and rice paddies. Flat, sandy terrain where you can observe waterfowl, flamingos in the lagoons and the changing landscape of Bajo Guadalquivir. A stage of pure nature, far from any elevation gain.

Cape of Gata-Níjar by bike

Cycle tourism through the only desert in Europe, within Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Dirt tracks between volcanic cones, salt flats with flamingos and almost pristine coves like Mónsul or Genoveses. Heat and exposure require an early start, but the land-sea contrast is unmatched in Andalusia.

30-60 min away

Half-hour side trips if you've time left or it rains.

Featured

King's Path, bike-free day

A day of rest for the legs: the Caminito del Rey in El Chorro (Málaga), a walkway suspended in the Gaitanes gorge over 100 m above the river. A linear route of about 7.7 km of easy but dizzying hiking, ideal for swapping the saddle for boots one day.
§06 — The practical side

Trek practicalities

Typical length

More practical details

Physical level & requirements

You should be able to cycle between 4 and 6 hours on consecutive days. Basic bike handling skills (braking downhill, changing gears). On Vías Verdes (Greenways), a low level of physical fitness is sufficient. Cycling through the white villages involves ramps and short elevation changes. Transnevada requires medium-to-high physical fitness and prior experience with mountain biking on varied terrain. Road cycling in Sierra Nevada requires a high level of fitness and prior experience riding long climbs.

How to get there

Best time to go: April–June and September–October are the best months for almost the entire destination. Greenways and white villages: March and November too. Sierra Nevada by mountain bike/road bike: June–September (the rest of the year there is snow above 1,800–2,000 m). In July and August, cycling is best done early in the morning or late in the evening at lower altitudes.

Bike rental: Granada, Sevilla, Málaga and Cádiz have shops with mountain bikes, gravel bikes, e-bikes and road bikes. E-bikes are recommended for Greenways with children or occasional hills.

Luggage: we offer transfers between accommodations (your backpack travels in a van, you cycle light). On the Transnevada route it is common to use panniers + partial logistical support.

Without a car: Granada and Sevilla are accessible by train from Madrid/Barcelona; from there, van transfers to the starting point.

Recommendations

In summer, get an early start: you can already be cycling at 7:00 AM and by 11:00 AM the south-facing slope of Andalusia starts to heat up. Bring a buff or scarf: the tunnels on the Vía Verde de la Sierra and del Aceite are cool and dark, you’ll appreciate having something handy for the change in light. Carry extra water between towns: on some rural stretches you won’t find a working fountain for 20-25 km. Book accommodation for the Transnevada in advance: the high mountain refuges are small and fill up in July and August.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a bike there, or do I have to bring my own?

You can rent at the origin (Granada, Seville, Málaga, Cádiz) — MTB, gravel, e-bike or road bike. If you bring your own, the accommodations we recommend have secure parking and basic tools. For road cycling in Sierra Nevada many people prefer to bring their own bike.

Is it suitable for traveling with children?

Yes, the Greenways are designed exactly for that: compact surface, almost no slope, no cars. The Sierra Greenway (Cádiz) and the Aceite-Subbética Greenway are the most recommended with family. For very young children, trailers and child seats work well.

What is the best time of year to visit?

April–June and September–October are the optimal window for almost everything. Greenways and white villages also work well in March and November. The Transnevada and the Sierra Nevada mountain passes by road are only suitable in summer (June–September).

Road bike or mountain bike?

It depends on the route. Greenways work with gravel bikes, MTBs and hybrids; the road isn’t ideal because the surface is compacted dirt. For mountain passes in Sierra Nevada, a road bike. For Transnevada and rural routes through mountains, MTB or gravel.

Is it possible to get around without a car?

Yes. The base cities (Granada, Seville, Málaga, Cádiz) have train service from Madrid and Barcelona. Picuco organizes van transfers to the start of the route and between accommodations so your luggage travels separately from the bike.
