§02 — The place

Sleep rocked by the sea, wake among dolphins

There's a moment, on the second day, when you stop checking the clock. The boat sails slowly, the biologist shouts "dolphins to starboard!" and everyone runs to the bow. In the afternoon you anchor in a cove, dive off the deck and snorkel until the sun drops. And at night, without a single light around, the sky fills with stars while the schooner gently pitches. It's not a floating hotel: it's the sea woven into your routine for a few days.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

Living aboard, not a boat trip

You sleep in a cabin and eat aboard for days. The sea stops being an excursion and becomes your routine.

  2. 02

    A marine biologist with you

It's not a tourist boat: a biologist sails aboard to interpret sightings and ensure the cetaceans are respected.

  3. 03

    A cetacean corridor

The waters between Cabo Tiñoso, Cabo Cope and Cabo de Gata gather dolphins, pilot whales and large migrating cetaceans.

  4. 04

    The sea sets the course

There's no rigid itinerary: the route is decided each day by the sea state and where the animals are.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection Groups Photography
A fit if you're drawn to sleeping aboard, sharing a sailing boat as a group and putting marine nature above comfort. Not a fit if you want a luxury-cabin cruise with service: here you help with meals, the space is that of a sailing boat and the plan depends on the sea. Nor is it a one-hour express watching trip: it's a voyage of several days. Cetacean sightings aren't guaranteed, though the area is excellent.

Logistics

Getting there, getting back, and internal transfers - so you only have to walk.

Featured

Boarding at Puerto de Mazarrón

All voyages set off from Puerto Deportivo de Mazarrón, home of the schooner Karyam, usually in the late afternoon.

Marine biologist and captain aboard

The crew always includes a captain and a marine biologist; on the full week, a sailor too.

Best time to sail

The weekend voyage runs in mid and high season; the full week in July, August and September, with calmer seas.

Stages

Day by day: distance, elevation, and where you sleep at the end of each stage.

Featured

Spotting dolphins and pilot whales

The heart of the voyage: seeking and watching cetaceans in the wild, with the biologist aboard reading every fin that surfaces.

Cabo Tiñoso marine reserve

Sailing past the cliffs of Cabo Tiñoso, one of the richest marine reserves of the Spanish Mediterranean.

Cabo Cope and the Águilas coast

Anchoring off Cabo Cope and the unspoilt coves of the Regional Park, on the way to Águilas.

Snorkelling and paddleboarding in coves

Diving off the deck, snorkelling in crystal-clear coves and paddleboarding between anchorages.

Starry nights at anchor

Dining on deck and sleeping rocked by the sea, under a light-pollution-free sky above the schooner.

Variants

Shorter or longer versions depending on days available and the group's level.

Featured

Weekend voyage (3 days)

The taster: 3 days and 2 nights along the Mazarrón coast to try life aboard without committing a whole week.

Life aboard, a full week (7 days)

Physical level & requirements

Low effort, but you need to be comfortable at sea. The sailing isn't strenuous, though you should move well on a moving deck and not suffer serious seasickness. Swimming is needed for snorkelling and swims. Suitable for most healthy adults.

How to get there

Boarding: Puerto Deportivo de Mazarrón (Murcia). Season: the weekend voyage in mid and high season; the full week in July, August and September. Aboard: double cabins, meals included (you help prepare them), a marine biologist and a captain. What to bring: a sleeping bag (on the full week), sea clothing, swimwear, sunscreen and light soft luggage. Cetaceans: a high-biodiversity area, but sightings are never guaranteed.

Recommendations

If you've never slept aboard, start with the weekend voyage before committing to the full week. Bring seasickness tablets for the first day just in case. Book the whole schooner with your group if you can: there's a discount and the experience is better. And respect the biologist's pace: you don't chase cetaceans, you wait for them.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are cetacean sightings guaranteed?

No. The sea between Cabo Tiñoso and Cabo de Gata is a cetacean corridor with a high chance of sightings, but these are wild animals and it's never guaranteed. The biologist aboard maximises the odds while respecting the animals.

How do you sleep and eat aboard?

In double cabins. Meals are included and prepared collaboratively among passengers; it's part of living aboard, not a serviced cruise.

Do I need sailing experience?

No. The crew (captain and marine biologist) handle the sailing. You just need to be comfortable at sea and able to swim for the snorkelling and swims.

What's the difference between the two voyages?

The weekend one is 3 days/2 nights along the Mazarrón coast, ideal to try life aboard. The full week is 7 days sailing between Cabo de Palos and Cabo de Gata, a total immersion.

Where does it sail from?

From Puerto Deportivo de Mazarrón, in Murcia. It's the home port of the schooner Karyam.
