§02 — The place

Green North, peaceful beaches and happy little ones at their own pace.

Cantabria with kids is that getaway that doesn’t wear you out: morning on a family beach like Sardinero or La Concha de Suances, lunchtime at Cabárceno watching bears and giraffes roam free or going into the Neocueva of Altamira, a long meal at an inn with sobaos for dessert, a short nap and sunset strolling through San Vicente de la Barquera with the Picos de Europa in the background. Stone villages like Santillana or Comillas, with the Capricho de Gaudí, offer days of quiet culture. The pace of the northern coast: without crowds, with umbrellas in the car just in case.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

Cabárceno: zoo in a restored quarry

7 km² of former iron mine converted into a nature park. Animals in semi-captivity — brown bears, elephants, giraffes, lions — tours by car or cable car. Unique in Europe for its scale and approach.

  2. 02

Altamira: the origin of cave art

The original cave is no longer open to the public for conservation purposes, but the Neocueva is an exact replica down to the millimeter: bison painted 15,000 years ago on rocky ceilings. The museum is interactive and suitable for all ages.

  3. 03

Gaudi in the North: The Whim

Before the Sagrada Familia, Gaudí built this summer house in Comillas in 1885: ceramics with sunflowers, minaret tower, garden. Small, visitable in an hour, no lines. Almost nobody knows it exists.

  4. 04

Green northern coast, without the crowds of the Mediterranean.

Wide beaches (Berria, La Salvé, Oyambre, Sardinero), fresh water, fine sand and green cliffs. Truly family-friendly: without noisy beach bars or umbrellas packed together.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

Adventure Family Local Life Kids
Suits families with little ones aged 2-12, grandparents travelling with grandchildren, and parents looking to combine coast + culture + accessible nature without the crowds. It works well for those who value pretty towns, long meals and flexible plans. Not suitable for those needing guaranteed sunshine (it can rain even for a whole week in August), families seeking adrenaline or technical adventure for teenagers, or those who prefer closed resorts with entertainment. If you’re expecting the Mediterranean, you will be disappointed.

Adventure

The active side: guided or self-guided activities, no sugar-coating the gradient.

Kayaking in the estuary of Suances

Two hours kayaking down the ría of San Martín de la Arena, between Suances and Requejada. Calm waters, no waves, ideal for beginners with children from 8 years old. Departure with a local guide, equipment included (life jacket, paddle, spray skirt). You can see cormorants and, if you’re lucky, herons in the mudflats. We time the trip to coincide with low tide so you don’t have to fight against the current.

Introduction to surfing at Somo Beach

2-hour class with a local surf school on the most famous beginner beach in Cantabria. Gentle waves, sandy bottom, certified instructor. Minimum age: 7-8 years old knowing how to swim. Includes wetsuit, soft board and vest. Best at mid-tide. In summer there are children's groups only.

Hiking to the Lakes of Liébana (Fuente Dé)

Cable car from Fuente Dé ascends to 1,823 m in height in 4 minutes. From the top, easy family stroll to the Cable viewpoint and, if the little ones can manage it, a route to the Puertos de Áliva (2 hours round trip). Views of the Picos de Europa. Bring a warm jacket even in August: it gets chilly at the top.

Culture & heritage

What makes this place different: heritage, crafts, local history.

Santillana del Mar: the city of three lies

Intact medieval complex: cobblestone streets, stately homes with coats of arms, the 12th-century Romanesque Collegiate Church. Visitable in a 2-hour walk. Called the town of three lies because it is neither holy, nor flat, nor does it have a sea. Arrive before 10:30 AM or after 7:00 PM to avoid tour buses. Can be combined with Altamira, 2 km away.

Altamira Museum + New Cave

The original cave has been closed for conservation since 2002, but the Neocueva is an exact replica, millimeter by millimeter, of the ceiling with the bison paintings from 15,000 years ago. The museum is interactive and suitable for all ages, with sections on Paleolithic life. Book online in advance. Combined entry, 1h30 inside.

Comillas: Gaudí's Capricho + Sobrellano Palace

Gaudí built this orientalist summer house in Comillas in 1885, before his Sagrada Familia: ceramics with sunflowers, a Persian-style minaret tower, garden. Small and visitable in 1 hour with a children's audio guide. 200 m away is the neo-Gothic Palacio de Sobrellano. Few people know that Gaudí worked in the north.

Caves of El Castillo (Puente Viesgo)

One of the oldest cave paintings in Europe: paintings and engravings 40,000 years old, negative hand stencils and bison. UNESCO World Heritage site. This one is visited directly (not a replica), small groups with a guide. Recommended minimum age: 7-8 years old. Online reservation essential. 50 minutes inside.

Food & drink

Eating well without the manual - local product, village pace.

Pasiego sobaos and cheesecakes

The two iconic sweets from the Pas Valley: sobao (butter, sugar and egg dough) and quesada (baked fresh cheese with lemon). Buy directly from an artisan factory in Vega de Pas or a bakery in Selaya. Perfect with breakfast or a snack on a terrace. Kids love them.

Santoña Anchovies in a can

Visit to an artisan cannery in Santoña (Catalina, Don Bocarte, Conservas Emilia) with explanation of the salting process in tin cans. The best anchovies from the Cantabrian Sea, handmade fillet preparation. Direct purchase cheaper than in store. Can be combined with an anchovy snack at a local bar.

Mountain stew at an inn

Flagship dish from inland Cantabria: white beans with kale, pork ribs, chorizo, black pudding and ear, slow-cooked all morning. Served at lunchtime in family-run inns in the Pas valley, Cabuérniga or Liébana. A single dish — you can eat and dine with this. Best in autumn-winter due to the temperature.

Fresh Seafood and Fish of the Day in San Vicente

Restaurants in the port of San Vicente de la Barquera: spider crabs, gooseneck barnacles, fried squid, clams in marinara sauce, sea bass or turbot of the day. Ask your server what came in that morning. Dine while watching the sunset over the estuary with the Picos de Europa mountains in the background. Reservations recommended for July-August.

Where to sleep

Where you sleep - inns, rural houses, hotels with character in the valley.

Inn in Santillana del Mar

Family-run guesthouses in restored historic manor houses within the medieval quarter: stone and wood, rooms with beams, homemade breakfast with local produce (sobaos, cheeses). Unbeatable location for visiting Altamira and Comillas. 70-110 €/night in a double room. Some have an interior patio for children.

Hotel in Suances with a swimming pool

Family hotels atop the Suances lighthouse with views of the Cantabrian Sea and an outdoor pool — a must in August if the sea water is too cool for little ones. 5 minutes walking distance from La Concha beach. Triple and quadruple rooms available. €100-160/night. Private parking.

Rural house in Liébana.

Entire country house (3-4 bedrooms, equipped kitchen, garden) in a village of the Liébana valley: Potes, Mogrovejo, Aliezo. For large families or groups with little ones who prefer independence. Ideal base for Fuente Dé and Santo Toribio monastery. 150-220 €/night entire house.

Berria Beach (Santoña)

Free parking, a basic beach bar, lifeguard service in July-August. Blue Flag beach. Behind it are the marshes, a natural bird reserve.

Monte Cabezón Sequoia Forest

Small monumental forest with 848 giant sequoias planted in 1940 near Cabezón de la Sal. It can be walked in an hour along a wide path among 36-meter trunks. Magical for children — it feels like a fairytale set. Free parking, no car access inside. Can be combined with a visit to Comillas.

Bring water and good footwear.

Half-hour side trips if you've time left or it rains.

§06 — The practical side

More practical details

Physical level & requirements

Minimal. A lot of driving between points + easy walking through historic towns and beaches. Cabárceno can be done entirely from the car. The caves and Capricho are accessible. No physical fitness is required for adults or children.

How to get there

Best time to visit: June to September, with July and August as the months with the most stable sunshine (no guarantees – the greenery exists because it rains). Always carry an umbrella and a long-sleeved layer even in the height of summer. A car is essential for getting around towns and beaches. It’s advisable to book Cabárceno online during peak season (July-August, Easter Week, long weekends). Altamira: the museum and the neocave are covered by the same ticket and are suitable for all ages; book several days in advance. Beaches usually don’t have lifeguards with a blue flag outside of July-August.

Recommendations

Cabárceno requires a full half-day and is more tiring than it looks: think carefully about whether to explore by car or cable car. Visit Santillana del Mar before 10:30 AM or after 7:00 PM to avoid tourist buses. Enjoy fresh fish for dinner in San Vicente de la Barquera while watching the sunset over the estuary. If you have an extra day, take a trip through Saja-Nansa to Bárcena Mayor — the best-preserved stone village in Cantabria. For rainy days: museums in Santander (MUPAC, Centro Botín), Altamira or the El Soplao caves.
§07 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does it rain a lot in August?

A shower can fall any day, even in the middle of August. July and August are the most stable months, but the Green North exists because it rains — bring an umbrella and a light raincoat. The good news: they are rarely full days of rain.

What minimum age do you recommend for Cabárceno?

It’s been working great for 2-3 years now – the animals can be seen from the car or cable car and there are play areas. Keep in mind that the park is huge (7 km²) and it’s tiring: with very young children, it's better to prioritize 2-3 areas instead of trying to see everything.

Can you visit the original Altamira Caves?

The original cave has been closed for conservation since 2002 (very restricted access, 5 people per week by lottery). The Neocueva is an exact replica of the bison ceiling made by restorers and scientists – the visual experience is the same.

Do the beaches have Blue Flags?

Yes: Sardinero (Santander), La Concha de Suances, La Salvé de Laredo, Berria and Trengandín de Noja, Oyambre. All are family-friendly with fine sand and gentle waves. Water is cool even in August (17-19°C).

Do I need a car?

Yes. It’s very difficult to get around between Santander, Santillana, Comillas, Cabárceno and the coastal towns without a car. The bus service exists but the schedules don’t allow for a relaxed family trip.
