§02 — The place

Nature, palaces and towns within 45 minutes of Madrid.

Leave Madrid at 9 a.m. on Saturday and by 10:30 a.m. you’re walking through La Pedriza among granite and pines, or along the Camino de Schmid sheltered by pine forests. Have lunch in La Granja with views of the baroque fountains, stroll around the palace of Felipe V in the afternoon and sleep in a rural house in Rascafría. On Sunday, visit the Paular Monastery or the Purgatorio Waterfall before returning. If you extend to three nights: add a full visit to El Escorial, the walls of Buitrago del Lozoya and Patones de Arriba with its slate. A nearby getaway, not a complete disconnection.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

Adventure Ecotourism Family History
Suits Madrid locals and visitors to Madrid who want a mix of nature and heritage on a short weekend trip, without taking a plane or changing time zones. Families with little ones, couples looking for a relaxed pace and small groups who value having central Madrid an hour away. Not suitable if you’re looking for total disconnection off the grid, absolute solitude or a remote destination: this is a nearby getaway with weekend traffic and parking lots full in La Pedriza from 10 am. For real off-grid experiences, check out the valley of Asón or Picos de Europa.

Check the fountain schedule at La Granja before you go (only on specific days during the season). Have dinner in Cercedilla or La Pedriza to avoid driving back to Madrid at night. If it rains: Casita del Príncipe in El Escorial, the monastery library or Real Fábrica de Cristales de La Granja.
§07 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car?

Not strictly. There is a bus to La Pedriza from Manzanares El Real; El Escorial is accessible via Cercanías train. A car offers more flexibility but is not essential.

When should I avoid?

August brings high heat to El Escorial (average temperatures around 33°C). La Pedriza can be overcrowded in August and on holidays. Spring and autumn are better times to visit.
