Discover Santoña

Santoña is the anchovy capital of the Cantabrian Sea and one of the most characterful seafaring towns on the Cantabrian coast. Nestled between Monte Buciero and the Santoña Marshes (Natural Park, 6,678 hectares), it combines fishing tradition, Napoleonic military heritage and one of the most important natural enclaves in northern Spain. The fishing port remains active with daily landings of anchovy and bonito. Artisan canneries maintain a tradition of over a century, inherited from 19th-century Italian salters. The Faro del Caballo lighthouse, reached by descending 763 steps carved into the cliff, is one of the most photographed viewpoints in Cantabria. The Marshes are a Ramsar site and key stopover for bird migration between Europe and Africa.

Highlights

  • • Faro del Caballo trail: 700 steps down the cliff face
  • • Artisan anchovy canneries with tastings
  • • Marshes Natural Park: migratory birds year-round
  • • Monte Buciero: spectacular coastal hiking trails
  • • Active fishing port with bonito and fried squid restaurants

Best time to visit

Year-round: spring and autumn for hiking, birds and nature; summer to combine with beach; winter for gastronomy and fresh anchovy season.

Practical tips

The Caballo Lighthouse is accessed from the Monte Buciero car park — arrive early in summer. Canning factory visits require advance booking. The boat crossing from Laredo via El Puntal is the most scenic way to arrive. The port bars serve excellent anchovies and bonito.
