Description

La Atalaya is a rocky headland separating La Salvé Beach from the fishing port, topped by the remains of the Fuerte del Rastrillar. It is the cone of a volcano extinct for millions of years, now a protected environmental park offering the best panoramic views in town.

From the summit you get a full 360-degree panorama: to the south, the vast La Salvé Beach stretching to the Regatón sandspit; to the north, the port and Puebla Vieja at your feet; to the east, the Bay of Santoña with Monte Buciero and the marshes; to the west, the Cantabrian coastal cliffs. On clear days the coastline is visible well beyond Noja.

The Fuerte del Rastrillar was begun in the 16th century as part of the defensive system for the Bay of Santoña, alongside the fortifications in Santoña and the Puntal emplacement. It guarded the bay entrance against naval attacks. Today the perimeter walls and parts of the sentry boxes remain, integrated into an interpretive trail.

The climb from Puebla Vieja takes about 15-20 minutes along a well-marked path that passes through the Túnel de la Atalaya, a passage cut through the rock connecting both sides of the headland. The surroundings are protected and home to native vegetation and seabirds.
