About Cycle Tourism

Cycle tourism is the art of exploring Spain at the pace of a bicycle: no stopwatch, no competition — just landscape, culture and kilometres ahead. Unlike road cycling or technical mountain biking, cycle tourism prioritises enjoyment, accessibility and connection with the natural and cultural surroundings of each region. Vías verdes (greenways) are the backbone of cycle tourism in Spain. These are former railway lines converted into shared cycling and walking paths, with a stabilised surface, minimal gradient and no motor traffic. Spain has over 3,000 kilometres of greenways spread across the country: the Vía Verde del Aceite (Córdoba–Jaén, 55 km through olive groves), the Vía Verde del Río Segura (Murcia), the Vía Verde de la Sierra (Cádiz, with spectacular viaducts and tunnels), the Vía Verde de Ojos Negros (Valencia–Teruel, the longest in Europe at 160 km) and the Carril del Cid (Cuenca), among many others. Guided cycle tourism routes typically cover 20–60 km per stage, with stops at villages, wineries, nature parks and viewpoints. The relaxed pace allows for local gastronomy, photography and rest at will. They are suitable for all fitness levels, including families with children, thanks to the low technical demands of the terrain and the option to rent electric bicycles to manage longer distances or gradients. Day excursions usually include a guide, insurance, and in many cases luggage transport and a return transfer to the starting point. Average prices range from €25–60 per person depending on duration and included services. Spring and autumn are the best times for cycle tourism in Spain: mild temperatures, landscape at its most photogenic and cooler than summer. Regions such as Andalusia, La Rioja, Aragon, the Valencia Community and Galicia (the Camino de Santiago by bike) are home to some of the country's most popular routes.
