What you'll experience

  1. Arrival in Granada and briefing

Arrival in Granada in the afternoon, transfer to the Postero Alto shelter (1.880 m, Jerez del Marquesado). Dinner at the shelter, technical briefing with the guide: pace, altitude management, what goes in the backpack and what goes in the support vehicle, quick bike check.

  2. High Poster → Trevélez via the north face

Entry stage: ~55 km and ~1,500 m elevation gain. We leave the shelter skirting the north face along the perimeter track, pass through mountain passes at 2,100 m with views of the Alcazaba and Mulhacén. Picnic-style lunch along the way. Overnight stay in rural accommodation in Trevélez.

  3. Trevélez → Poqueira Refuge via high passes

Queen stage: ~50 km and ~1,700 m elevation gain. We cross the highest passes on the route, technical sections with loose stones and delicate steps. Arrival at the Poqueira refuge (2,500 m), the closest shelter to Mulhacén. Dinner and overnight stay in shared bunks.

  4. Link stage along the perimeter trail

Transition stage: ~60 km and ~1,300 m elevation gain along the perimeter track of the National Park. Fast and rolling sections, high mountain scenery, Trevenque viewpoint in the background. Overnight stay in a rural house in Las Alpujarras.

  5. Epic descent to Capileira and closing

Final stage: ~40 km with a long descent through the Barranco del Poqueira to Capileira. High trail, nettles and viewpoints overlooking the ravine. Farewell meal in Capileira and transfer by support vehicle back to Granada (~90 min).

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection

This trip is a good fit if you have real mountain biking experience: you can handle 5 hours of riding and 1,500 m of elevation gain per stage, know how to handle a bike on mountain tracks and downhill with loose stones, and are coming in a group of friends or as a couple with good stamina. It’s an ideal plan for groups of 4 to 8 cyclists who have already done long treks.

It’s not a good fit if you’ve never done multi-day routes, if you're travelling with young children, if you’re uncomfortable sleeping in shared shelters or if you are looking for a relaxed cycling tour. It's also not suitable for road bikes or light gravel bikes: full suspension is recommended, or at least a hardtail with wide tires.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

Is it necessary to bring your own bike or can you rent one?
Ideally, bring your own mountain bike (full suspension is best). If you don’t have one, we can arrange a rental with shops in Granada (~120 €/5 days, trail model). Let us know your height and size when you confirm so we can reserve one with a buffer.
What mountain biking level is required for the crossing?
Medium-high. You need to be prepared for 5-7 hours of cycling and 1,500 m of elevation gain per stage, handle mountain tracks with loose stones and descend technical sections carefully. This is not for beginners or mixed groups with very different levels of experience.
What if a stage is too challenging for someone in the group?
That's why the support vehicle is included. If anyone has a tough day, they can get in the car and rejoin for the next stage. The guide assesses how the group is doing each morning and adjusts the pace accordingly.
What is the best time of year to hike the Transnevada?
June to October, avoiding June if there is remaining snow at higher elevations and August due to the extreme heat on the south-facing slopes. The best times are late June, all of September and the first half of October.
Can this be done privately for a closed group?
Yes, this combo is designed for groups of friends or couples (4-8 people). Tell us your dates and level, and we’ll put together custom trips with a guide and shelters reserved just for you.
