Description

The Gothic Ensemble of Castro Urdiales is the most recognisable image on the eastern Cantabrian coast. On the headland overlooking the fishing port stand the church of Santa María de la Asunción, the Santa Ana castle-lighthouse, the Santa Ana chapel and the medieval bridge, forming a monumental group spanning eight centuries of seafaring history.

The church of Santa María, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, is the finest Gothic building in all of Cantabria. With three naves, an ambulatory and radial chapels, its architecture echoes French Norman Gothic. Inside, highlights include a polychrome wooden Gothic Christ and a canvas attributed to Zurbarán.

The castle-lighthouse, pentagonal with cylindrical towers, dates from the 12th century and now houses an active lighthouse. The medieval bridge, known as the Roman bridge, connects the headland to the Santa Ana chapel via an arch spanning the sea. The ensemble is freely visitable and is illuminated at sunset, creating an unforgettable silhouette.
