Description

Coasteering is the most fun and wild way to discover the coastline: a route that combines jumping into the sea from cliffs, rock scrambling (psicobloc), open water swimming, and sea cave exploration, all right along the shoreline. In the Oriñón and Sonabia area, on the Costa Oriental de Cantabria, the coastline forms coves, arches, and grottos that turn into a natural adventure park. During the route, you will be jumping from different heights (always at your own pace and voluntarily), swimming between rock walls, passing through caves illuminated by the reflection of the water, and overcoming small sections by scrambling over the sea. It is always carried out with certified professional guides who know the tides and the safe heights for each jump, and who adapt the route to the sea conditions and the group's level. It includes full technical equipment: wetsuit, helmet with headlamp, protective gloves, and activity insurance. You do not need previous experience, but you must know how to swim and feel comfortable in the water. The activity lasts between three and four hours and is an ideal experience for groups of friends and those seeking equal parts adrenaline and nature. The meeting point is located in the Oriñón–Sonabia area, in the municipality of Castro Urdiales.

Wear your swimsuit, secure wetsuit boots or water shoes (avoid flip-flops), a towel, and dry clothes to change into. In summer, add waterproof sunscreen. Eat something light beforehand and use the restroom before putting on the wetsuit. Always listen to the guide regarding which jumps are safe depending on the day's tide and never jump in non-indicated areas. If you get tired, let them know: there are always options to bypass the most demanding steps. Above all, enjoy the surroundings and respect the wildlife and the coastal rock.

Physical Requirements

Swimming skills and medium physical fitness are required: the activity combines open water swimming, scrambling, and jumping for 3-4 hours. It is not suitable for non-swimmers, people with serious heart conditions, recent injuries, or pregnant women. It is advisable to feel comfortable in the water and with the swell. The highest jumps are always optional.

About the Area

Oriñón and Sonabia form one of the most beautiful corners of the Costa Oriental de Cantabria, in the municipality of Castro Urdiales. The wide beach of Oriñón, sheltered at the mouth of the Agüera river, and the cliffs of Sonabia, presided over by the peculiar monte Candina and its hanging dunes, create a spectacular coastal landscape, dotted with coves, caves, and rock arches. It is an ideal area for swimming, coastal hiking, and water activities, very close to the seaside town of Castro Urdiales and the Parque Natural de las Marismas de Santoña. The combination of beach, cliff, and nature makes it a perfect setting for coasteering.
