§02 — The place

Wine, embers of the vine, a long linger over lunch.

A weekend in La Rioja is stepping into a barrel room that smells of American oak, enjoying a steak grilled over vine shoots with the vineyard right in front of you, and ending the day on Calle Laurel ordering mushrooms with a young wine in a small glass. There’s no need to rush: wineries offer three-hour visits, kitchens don't open until two o’clock, and between tastings you head to the next town with the radio on and vineyards passing by the window.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

    The Station District of Haro

Seven century-old wineries in one square kilometer: López de Heredia, Muga, La Rioja Alta, CVNE, Bilbaínas, Gómez Cruzado and Roda. They arrived in 1880 to send Rioja by rail to Bordeaux; they still make wine there. There is no other place in the world with that concentration.

  2. 02

Wine and contemporary architecture, side by side.

Marqués de Riscal with the hotel by Frank Gehry in Elciego, Ysios by Santiago Calatrava, Viña Tondonia with a pavilion by Zaha Hadid. The D.O.Ca. Rioja invested in renowned architects when the rest of the sector was still building industrial warehouses – now you can enjoy tastings inside buildings designed by famous names.

  3. 03

Laurel Street: 50 bars in 200 meters

In Logroño, each bar on Laurel Street specializes in a snack — Soriano makes mushrooms, Donosti makes shrimp skewer, Sebas makes stuffed pork sausage. You go in, order A snack with A young red wine, leave and move on to the next. It costs 2-3€ per stop. There's nothing like it in Spain.

  4. 04

A capital city with high-speed train and airports an hour away.

Logroño has a direct high-speed train from Madrid (3h) since 2024. Bilbao is a 1h30 drive away and Vitoria is 1h. For a 2-3 night getaway without losing a day to travel, accessibility is real – you don’t need to take a whole week.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

Romantic Disconnection Local Life Gastronomy
Suits couples who enjoy long meals, foodie groups of friends, and unhurried travelers wanting to understand wine beyond the price tag. Also ideal for birthday or anniversary celebrations looking for a white tablecloth experience. NOT suitable for families with very young children needing a playground every two hours (this isn’t Cabárceno) or anyone with an alcohol allergy – the local gastronomy revolves around wine, even the snack on a terrace has a wine base. For families with active children, Sierra de Cazorla or Costa Cantabria are better; for a gastro getaway without so much wine, Ribeira Sacra or the Valle del Asón are good options.

Culture & heritage

What makes this place different: heritage, crafts, local history.

Featured

Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture (Briones)

World’s best wine museum according to the OIV. 4,000 m² with Roman presses, amphorae, antique corkscrews and art (Picasso, Sorolla, Warhol with a wine theme). Allow 2h for a leisurely visit. Includes a tour of the Vivanco winery and tasting. €25. 10 min from Haro. Perfect for a rainy afternoon.

San Vicente de la Sonsierra at sunset

Medieval town perched on a rock with a 12th-century castle, Romanesque hermitage of Santa María la Mayor and views over the Ebro valley. The Baroque Calvary on the outskirts is the best sunset photo spot in La Rioja. Free visit, 1h-1h30 walking around. Ideal to stop for a snack on a terrace or dinner in the Plaza Mayor.

Wine Architecture: Gehry, Calatrava, Hadid

Half-day route through three icons: hotel Marqués de Riscal by Frank Gehry (Elciego, 2006), Ysios winery by Santiago Calatrava (Laguardia, 2001) and Tondonia pavilion by Zaha Hadid (Haro, 2006). Not all are visited inside – Ysios has a specific tour, Gehry is for guests/restaurant only. Good for exterior photography.

Food & drink

Eating well without the manual - local product, village pace.

Guided tour of Marqués de Riscal (Elciego)

Tour of the historic winery of Marqués de Riscal (1858) and the Frank Gehry building from 2006 — century-old barrel room, wine museum and tasting of 4 wines: Marqués de Riscal white, rosé, Reserva red and Gran Reserva. Duration 2h. Book 2-3 weeks in advance during high season.

Breakfast only

Breakfast included daily at the lodging. Lunches and dinners at your choice.

Visit to López de Heredia Viña Tondonia (Haro)

The most authentic winery in the Station neighborhood of Haro: founded in 1877, it has been passed down through four generations of the same family and continues to produce unfiltered wines, clarified with egg white. Wine tasting of 3 wines including the Tondonia Reserva. The entrance pavilion is by Zaha Hadid. 1h30, €30.

Half board (dinner)

Breakfast + dinner daily at selected restaurants, without wine pairing.

Gourmet wine pairing

2 paired meals (4-5 wines per meal) at starred or notable restaurants.

Food pairing meal at Echaurren (Ezcaray)

Casa Echaurren in Ezcaray combines two restaurants: Tradición (Marisa Sánchez, lifelong Riojan recipes) and El Portal (Francis Paniego, Michelin star, creative cuisine with Riojan produce). 50 min from Haro. Tasting menu €110-160 with pairings. Reservation essential.

Pintxos and snacks crawl along Calle Laurel (Logroño)

200 meters of street with ~50 bars, each specializing in a pintxos. Soriano (garlic mushrooms since 1947), Donosti (prawn skewer), Sebas (stuffed sausage), El Cid (brave potatoes). The formula: a pintxos + a young wine in a glass per bar, 2-3€ each stop. 4-5 stops make dinner. We recommend a local guide to not miss the best ones.

Wood-fired ribeye steak in a country grill

Grills in San Asensio, Briones or Cuzcurrita roast old cow steak over vine shoot embers – the shoots give a dry, smoky flavor distinct from charcoal. Typical accompaniment: roasted peppers, Rioja-style potatoes, Anguiano red beans. 45-60€ per person with house wine. Book 24-48h in advance.

A snack on a terrace in the Market Square (Haro)

Sunday ritual in La Rioja: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM in the Market Square of Haro or any bar in Logroño. Padró Fórmula, a snack on a terrace and a tapa of gilda. The street fills with locals before the long after-dinner chat. No reservation needed, just go down and see where there’s space.

Small family winery with an intimate visit.

Small family wineries (Olivier Rivière, Tentenublo, Exopto, Artuke in Baños de Ebro) welcome groups of 4-8 people; you’ll meet the winemaker themselves and enjoy an unscripted tasting. A useful contrast to the larger historical wineries: here you see the process on a human scale. 25-40€. Minimum one week’s notice for booking.

How many wineries can I visit in one day?

Two visits with tastings and one meal is reasonable. Three is possible if you start early and coordinate timing.

Do I need a car?

Recommended. Wineries are spread out and towns are small. We can arrange a private driver—just let us know during your quote.

May–June (lush green vineyards) and September–October (harvest season). Summer works too, but midday heat can be intense.

Is it suitable for non-drinkers?

Yes — wineries offer tours without tastings, and restaurants provide menus without pairings. Wine enhances the experience, but it’s not required.
