Why it stands out
- 01
A gorge every 5 km
From Tornavacas to Madrigal de la Vera, the Gredos range pours 10 parallel gorges southwards. Every village has its own and all have signposted natural pools. The highest density of natural swimming pools in Spain.
- 02
Paprika with its own D.O.
La Vera paprika has held a Protected Designation of Origin since 2007. It is smoked over oak and holm-oak for 10-15 days, never sun-dried. That gives it the deep flavour that sets it apart from Hungarian or American paprika.
- 03
Charles V's historic retreat
Emperor Charles V abdicated in 1556 and chose to retire to Yuste Monastery, in Cuacos. He died there two years later. The crypt and southern gallery with his gout chair are open to visitors, giving the site a unique historical weight.

Rural houses set up for yoga
Over the past decade, several rural houses in La Vera have adapted a lounge or covered porch into a yoga room with wooden flooring, mats and blocks. It's not marketing: there's real infrastructure to arrive and start practicing without your own gear.
Who it fits
Fits if you want to combine gentle hiking + yoga + good food on an unpretentious weekend. Good for couples, friend trips and solo travellers. Works well for reconnecting with yourself (or your partner).
Doesn't fit if you want hard mountain routes (try northern Gredos: Hoyos del Espino, Plataforma) or nightlife. La Vera turns the lights off early and the villages are quiet.

More practical details
Physical level & requirements
Low-to-moderate fitness. Typical route 5-9 km with 200-400 m elevation and slow pace. Gorges require care on wet rock but not strength.
How to get there
When: spring and autumn are perfect (15-25 °C). Summer is hot (35 °C is normal) but gorges are THE solution; locals go swimming only from June to September.
Access: Madrid 200 km (2h15) via A-5 + EX-203. Madrid airport 220 km. A car is essential to link gorges and villages.
Gear: grippy shoes for wet rocks, swimwear, towel, insect repellent, yoga mat if the house doesn't provide one (worth confirming).
Recommendations
Get to the gorges early — they fill up after 1 PM in summer. Visit Yuste Monastery (Cuacos) if you like history. Buy La Vera paprika directly in Jaraíz — Cooperativa del Valle is a benchmark. Dine at La Tahona (Garganta la Olla) if open, or at Casa Pacheca.

Frequently asked questions
Can I swim in the gorges any time of year?
The water is always freezing (10-15 °C) as it comes off the Almanzor. June-September air temperature makes it enjoyable. Outside that, only for the brave.
Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?
No. Most retreats welcome beginners and the teacher adapts. Breathing well matters more than touching your toes.
Are there family-friendly trails?
Yes: Almez path (1.5 km, flat) and Garganta Mayor from Jaraíz to the natural pool (3 km, near-flat). Kids swim.
How long from Madrid?
2h15-2h30 by car via A-5 (Plasencia) + EX-203. Train coverage is poor; Plasencia (40 km) is connected but a car is still needed.
What's the difference with Valle del Jerte?
Jerte is famous for cherry blossoms (late March-April) and lies north of Tornavacas. La Vera lies south of the pass, in Cáceres province — gentler, hotter, with wider gorges. They can be combined.
