The source of the Asón River is one of the most impressive waterfalls in northern Spain: a 70-metre drop gushing directly from the limestone wall of the Porracolina massif, in the Collados del Asón Natural Park. The route starts from the Collados del Asón recreation area and reaches the base of the waterfall in about 45 minutes along a signposted path through beech woods and mountain meadows. Water flow varies hugely by season: after rain or snowmelt the waterfall is spectacular, while in dry summer it can reduce to a trickle. The surroundings are a mountain karst landscape with rock formations, sinkholes and a well-preserved Atlantic ecosystem. You can continue the route to the upper viewpoints of the natural park for panoramic valley views.
