Discover Álava

Álava packs three distinct landscapes into fewer than 3,000 km²: the Gorbeia massif rising to 1,482 metres with beech forests wrapped in morning mist, the Álava plain crossed by ancient drove roads, and the wine-growing south of Rioja Alavesa. The GR-282 traverses Gorbeia Natural Park from north to south; in spring the muddy beechwood gives way to open meadows with views towards the Cantabrian Sea and, on clear days, the Pyrenees. Rioja Alavesa blends cycling routes through vineyards with visits to wineries of striking contemporary architecture. Laguardia, a walled medieval town perched on a hilltop, organises the landscape around its 1,100 inhabitants: arcaded streets, 12th-century underground wine cellars and viewpoints over the Ebro. The Via Verde del Plazaola follows the Navarrese border along a gently graded converted railway, well suited for families. The Salinas de Añana salt flats, in continuous use for more than 6,000 years, present a terraced landscape of active salt pans where walking routes make the scale of the historical hydraulic engineering tangible.

Best time to visit

May–June for green beech forest and dry trails. September–October for harvest in Rioja Alavesa and autumn colour in Gorbeia. Avoid July–August in the southern wine zone due to heat.

Practical tips

Vitoria-Gasteiz has an urban cycle network and e-bike rental: useful as a base for the vineyards 60 km south. For Gorbeia, park at Murua or Sarría and take the marked trails uphill. In winter the summit can be snow-covered; check conditions with the natural park before setting out.

Frequently asked questions sobre Álava

The GR-282 has stages with up to 800m of elevation gain. The Gorbeia beech forest sections require good physical condition; the Rioja Alavesa routes are much gentler and accessible to all levels.
May–June and September–October are ideal. During harvest season (Sept–Oct) the vineyards change colour and many wineries open special activities. Summer can be very hot in the Ebro valley.
They are 30 km by car (35 min). There is no direct public transport, so it is worth combining the visit with a hiking route in the area or renting a bicycle in Vitoria.
The greenway enters Álava from Echarri-Aranaz (Navarra) and runs to Pamplona. The stretch is flat and mostly paved, crossing the Arakil valley through restored tunnels.
