Description

Visit and tasting at Bodegas Marqués de Riscal, the historic winery founded in 1858 in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa) and one of the references of Spanish enotourism. The estate combines the original 19th-century winery —the so-called "Cathedral of Wine", with vintages preserved since 1862— with the modern facilities and the iconic City of Wine designed by Frank Gehry, inaugurated in 2006, which today houses the Hotel Marqués de Riscal and the Caudalíe Spa.

The visit is guided and combines history of the house, viticulture, winemaking, ageing in barrel and bottle, and tasting. Three modalities are offered, all with prior booking and lasting 90-105 minutes: a basic visit (30€) with three wines and a local snack, a premium visit (45€) with a tasting of premium wines accompanied by cheeses and cold cuts, and a premium visit (60€) with selected wines including Barón de Chirel and Iberian ham. Visits can be booked in Spanish, English, French or German.

Elciego sits in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, between Logroño and Vitoria. Beyond the winery, the village and the surroundings offer rural lodging, wineries open to the public, and traditional Riojan cuisine; the area combines historic and modern winemaking with the appeal of Gehry's architectural icon.
