Context
The spring mushroom foraging trail takes place in the Montes de Vitoria and the Salburua wetland, a protected natural area located just outside Vitoria-Gasteiz. This landscape combines mixed forests with wetland zones, creating ideal conditions for the emergence of spring mushrooms such as Morchella and Amanita. The activity begins and ends at the Ataria Interpretation Center, a local hub dedicated to regional biodiversity and wetland conservation. The route covers 8 km with a gentle elevation gain of 150 meters, making it suitable for a light hiking experience.
The Experience
Over four hours, you’ll walk along forest trails and wetland paths, breathing in the fresh scent of damp earth and fresh leaves. Guided by a certified mycologist, you’ll learn to identify and collect seasonal mushrooms responsibly, observing their shapes, colors, and textures. Bird songs accompany the journey, with scheduled stops to sort and study specimens, and to understand their ecological roles. The day concludes at Ataria with a detailed review of the species found and a deeper look into wetland ecosystems and their importance.
