Discover Lugo

Lugo receives the Camino Primitivo, the oldest pilgrim route, which enters through the provincial capital with its 2nd-century Roman walls and continues to Santiago through mountains and stone villages lined with hórreos. The full 313 km of the Camino Primitivo pass through some of the most solitary stretches of any Camino route: alternating wet meadows, eucalyptus and oak woodland. To the east, the Ancares Lucenses natural park protects the last inhabited palloza stone huts and Galicia's highest summits, with Penarrubia peak at 1,969 m. The Sil river gorges to the south offer canyoning and kayaking between 300 m walls; the Ribeira Sacra tourist boat shows the canyons without specialist equipment. The coast includes a stretch of the quieter Camino del Norte, with the rías altas and Cantabrian beaches. The thermal waters of Outeiro de Rei and other natural spas round out the offer with springs rising at 45 °C in open countryside.

Practical tips

Lugo city is the only city in the world with a complete Roman wall circuit (2.1 km, 10 gates). Use it as a base for the Camino Primitivo and surrounding thermal spas. For Ribeira Sacra, book boat trips well in advance in summer; places sell out in July–August.
