Viveiro is a coastal town on the Mariña Lucense (Lugo) with medieval walls, an estuary and a carnival declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. Three medieval gates (Vila, Valado, Castelo da Ponte) lead into a historic quarter of lanes and squares with the Romanesque church of Santa María del Campo (12th century).
The Viveiro estuary is the largest on the Cantabrian coast, with fine sand beaches (Covas, Area), a waterfront promenade and fishing harbour. The Souto da Retorta, a few kilometres away, houses one of Europe oldest eucalyptus groves.
Viveiro is an ideal base for exploring the northern Lugo coast: Punta do Fociño do Porco (O Vicedo), San Andrés de Teixido, Estaca de Bares and the Mariña beaches.
