Description

The world's only Roman wall preserving its complete perimeter: 2,266 metres, 71 towers and 10 gates encircling Lugo's historic quarter. UNESCO World Heritage since 2000, built between the 3rd and 4th centuries to protect Roman Lucus Augusti. The entire circuit can be walked along the sentry path, with views over old town rooftops, the cathedral and Galician mountains.

Visitor Tips

Free 24h access via stairs at any gate. Full sentry path circuit: 45 min. Best at sunset for light. Thursdays, Lugo Market (pulpo a feira tapas by the wall). Parking at Plaza de la Constitución.

Historical Facts

Lucus Augusti was founded in 25 BC as capital of the Lucense Convent. The wall was built between 263 and 325 AD to defend the city from Germanic invasions. It is the only one from its era preserving the full 2,266m perimeter. UNESCO World Heritage since 2000.
