Description

Rock formations up to 30 metres high resembling the buttresses and vaults of a Gothic cathedral, carved by Cantabrian erosion on the Ribadeo coast. The spectacle is only visible at low tide, when you can walk between stone arches, caves and natural columns on the sand. Declared a Natural Monument, access is limited to 4,812 daily visitors in summer (free online booking on the Xunta website).

Essential to check tide tables — beach only accessible at low tide. Online booking mandatory July-September (free, Xunta website). Arrive 2h before low tide to make the most of it. Wear shoes that can get wet. Paid parking in summer.

Historical Facts

Its real name is Praia de Augas Santas (Beach of Holy Waters), for a freshwater spring on the sand. The "Cathedrals" name is recent, coined by tourism to describe the formations. Declared Natural Monument in 2005. The booking system was implemented in 2015 after reaching 10,000 daily visitors.
