Discover Community of Madrid

The Community of Madrid offers 675 outdoor activities with a feature few European regions can match: 50 minutes' drive from the city centre, the Central System reaches 2,430 metres at Pico Peñalara, with high-mountain trails, cross-country ski routes and granite walls for year-round climbing. The Sierra de Guadarrama frames the mountain offer. The National Park, designated in 2013, protects 34,000 hectares where family hiking around Peñalara's glacial lakes, mountain biking on the forest tracks of Cotos and Navacerrada, and climbing on the granite boulders of La Pedriza coexist — La Pedriza is considered one of Spain's best bouldering areas, with over 2,000 documented problems. In winter, when snow falls above 1,500 metres, snowshoe operators in Cercedilla and Rascafría sell out their weekend slots in January and February. To the north, the Lozoya Valley connects with the Pinilla reservoir and the Lozoya river, where kayak descents and sport fishing find their best waters in the community. The Somosierra area, at the border with Segovia, is the usual destination for groups combining multi-day hiking with rural accommodation. Within the metropolitan area, urban and peri-urban activities are substantial: cycling routes along the Manzanares green ring, hot-air balloon flights over the southern landscapes from Colmenar Viejo, and several urban hiking companies working the cerros of Vallecas or the Monte de El Pardo. Madrid also serves as a logistics hub for activities in nearby regions: Cuenca, Ávila, Guadalajara and Toledo add hundreds of options within two hours.

Best time to visit

Spring (March–May) for hiking and climbing: 12–20°C, vegetation at its peak, no crowds. January–February for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when there is snow. October–November for mountain biking in autumn colour. Summer is feasible at high altitude (Peñalara, Cuerda Larga) but July and August weekends push the national park to capacity.

Practical tips

Vehicle access to Guadarrama National Park has capacity controls in summer: Cotos and La Pedriza limit the number of cars. Arrive before 8:30am or take the Cercedilla-to-Cotos train (departs 9:05am on weekends). For climbing at La Pedriza, download the Community of Madrid digital topo before leaving: mobile coverage in the massif is patchy. Bring layers whatever the season; temperature drops 6–7°C per 1,000 metres of altitude compared to central Madrid.

Frequently asked questions sobre Community of Madrid

La Pedriza is 55 km from central Madrid via the A-1 and M-609. There is no direct public transport to the lower car park; bus 724 reaches Manzanares el Real, from where it's a 3 km walk to the park entrance. The car park charges in peak season (spring–autumn); arriving before 9am avoids the capacity gate.
Puerto de Navacerrada (1,860m) has cross-country tracks when natural snow allows, typically January to March. Alpine skiing at the pass is inactive after the concession was not renewed; operators moved to Cotos. Valdesquí (Rascafría) and La Pinilla (Segovia, 15 km from the Madrid border) are the nearest active alpine resorts.
The Lozoya has good flow for kayak descents November to May, when reservoirs regulate water release. June to September sees flow drop significantly; in that period operators focus on flat-water kayaking on the Pinilla reservoir. March and April are the best months: cold water but guaranteed flow.
The C-8a commuter train reaches Cercedilla and El Escorial. From Cercedilla, the narrow-gauge train climbs to Puerto de Navacerrada and Cotos (lines P-11 and P-12), giving direct access to Peñalara and the Valle de La Fuenfría trails. From El Escorial, the PR-M 26 trail climbs to Monte Abantos (1,753m) without needing a car. Check La Rheinita railway timetables before planning.
Balloon flights over the Community of Madrid depart mainly from Colmenar Viejo, Guadalix de la Sierra and Segovia (90 km away). Prices range from €150 to €200 per person for 1 to 1.5-hour flights. Departure is at dawn; return to the launch point is usually included. Operators cancel in winds above 15 km/h.
