Discover Rascafría

Rascafría is a municipality in Madrid's Sierra Norte, set in the heart of the Paular Valley at the foot of Peñalara and within the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. It is one of the most complete nature destinations in the Madrid region: mountains, forest, river, monumental heritage and outdoor activities an hour from the capital. The Monastery of Santa María de El Paular, founded in 1390, is Rascafría's heritage jewel. This Carthusian-Benedictine monastery preserves an exceptional Gothic altarpiece and gardens that invite contemplative strolls. Nearby, the natural pools of Las Presillas, on the Aguilón stream, are the quintessential family plan in summer. The summit of Peñalara (2,428 m), Madrid's highest point, and the Laguna Grande offer high-mountain routes. The area has climbing, eMTB routes through the sierra, horseback riding through the valley and cross-country skiing in winter. The Scots pine and Pyrenean oak forests harbour rich wildlife: black vulture, imperial eagle, red deer and roe deer. Rascafría is the natural base for exploring the Lozoya Valley and the Madrid side of the Sierra de Guadarrama.
