Description

The Cueva del Reguerillo is a karst cave located in the municipality of Patones, within the Community of Madrid. It is the largest cave in this autonomous community, recognized as a Natural Monument for its geological and paleontological value. Its formation results from the dissolution of limestone rocks, creating an underground system with galleries and chambers of great scientific interest.

Inside the cave, you can observe typical karst geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, as well as fossil remains of prehistoric fauna. Notably, bones of cave bears and hyenas that inhabited the area during the Pleistocene period have been found. These fossils provide valuable information about the climate and biodiversity of past eras.

Historically, the cave has been the subject of speleological and paleontological studies since the mid-20th century. Its protection as a Natural Monument aims to conserve this underground heritage and prevent damage caused by human activity. The Patones area, with its mountainous landscape and rock formations, offers a natural environment representative of central Spain.

Visiting the Cueva del Reguerillo is recommended with proper equipment and specialized guides, as access can be challenging and requires caution. Visits typically last between one and two hours. There are no official opening hours or entrance fees, but prior information is advised to coordinate the visit. The cave is not accessible for people with reduced mobility and is not suitable for young children. Pets are allowed under supervision. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when weather conditions are milder and more stable.
