Adventure weekend in the Asón Valley (Eastern Cantabria): kayak, via ferrata and country inn

Two nights at a small country inn in the valley, an intense Saturday of river and heights, then a Sunday of cave paintings and the Cantabrian coast.

In Eastern Coast of Cantabria · Cantabria

Getaway · 2 nights

From 170 € /person

At a glance
  • Local guides with decades in the valley, not rotating activity-company staff
  • 1 hour by car from Bilbao or Santander: a real weekend break without losing half a day on the road
  • A small, uncrowded valley: no resorts, no queues, no overtourism
  • Fully organised from start to finish: inn, activities, guides, technical equipment and insurance

What you'll experience

  1. Arrival and waterfall viewpoint.

You enter the inn, leave your belongings and head up to the Asón Waterfall viewpoint: 50 meters of water cascading between vertical walls, a 15-minute drive away. A quiet dinner in the village and early to bed: tomorrow is river day.

  2. Canoe descent on the Asón River.

Three hours on a clean river, limestone walls and valley silence. Your guide is local and knows every pool and every pebble beach where to stop. You’ll return with a clear head and craving for home-cooked food.

  3. Via Ferrata K2 in Ramales

Three hours of climbing with a guide and equipment: handrails, zip lines, views of the valley from above and just the right amount of adrenaline. You arrive at the inn with tired muscles and dinner waiting for you.

  4. Coves and the Cantabrian coast

Long breakfast, 30-minute route to the Covalanas cave (20,000-year-old cave paintings, declared a World Heritage Site) and descent to the Laredo promenade. Walk with the sea in front of you and a snack on a terrace before getting back in the car.

What's included

This is what the bundle covers. If you want to tweak something, we'll sort it in the proposal.

Lodging

  • 2 nights at a valley country inn, double room with breakfast

Transfers

  • Pickup at Santander Station
If you arrive in Santander by train or bus, pickup on Friday afternoon and transfer to the valley (about 50 minutes by road). One less worry: no need to figure out rural bus connections with luggage to start the weekend.

Meals

  • Saturday lunch at the valley tavern
Reserved table at a valley tavern for Saturday midday, between canoeing and via ferrata. Honest Cantabrian cuisine, portions to replenish energy, and just enough time not to be late for the afternoon adventure. The guide will recommend a place depending on the group.

Extras

  • Welcome briefing upon arrival.
When you arrive on Friday afternoon, the Picuco guide will dedicate 30 minutes to help you make the most of the weekend: short routes for Sunday, restaurants in the valley that are worth visiting, tide times if you want to go down to the cape, and where to park for canoeing on Saturday. No need to be looking at questionable maps on your phone.
  • Saturday night dinner at the inn
Dinner at the inn after a long day: valley cuisine, a quiet table and nothing to arrange. You arrive with your body asking for a seat and they put the plate in front of you. The ideal plan to extend the conversation without having to get back in the car.

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Romantic
This package is built for active couples and groups of friends looking for a weekend with the right dose of adrenaline by day and the slow rhythm of a country inn by night. It fits especially well if you value the local guide who has spent decades in the valley over the large resort, if you prefer a small, uncrowded destination to the mainstream option, and if you want a trip organised from start to finish without booking anything separately. It is not the best fit if you travel with very young children (the K2 via ferrata accepts ages 12 and up, as does the kayak), if you are looking for total spa-style relaxation, or if you need the maximum comfort of a 4-5 star hotel: the valley inns are welcoming but homely. It is also a poor fit if you want a beach holiday: the Cantabrian coast is 25 minutes from the valley but this package is designed for inland life, not the coast. If any of this does not quite click, ask us about other Cantabria packages: we have options for families with young kids, more relaxed coastal getaways, or trips based out of an urban hotel in Santander. The first conversation is free and we steer you to the package that does fit.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

What is the minimum age for children?
The K2 via ferrata is open from age 12 and so is the Asón kayak. If you travel with younger kids, tell us when you book and we will propose an equivalent package with age-appropriate activities.
Do I need previous experience with via ferrata or kayak?
No. The K2 via ferrata is rated beginner to intermediate, ideal for first-timers comfortable with moderate height. The kayak section of the Asón has no dangerous rapids and you wear a life jacket at all times. The guide gives an initial briefing in both cases before you start.
Where is the Asón Valley? How long does it take from Bilbao, Santander or Madrid?
The Asón Valley sits in the easternmost corner of Cantabria, bordering the Basque Country. It belongs to the Asón-Agüera district and its main town is Ramales de la Victoria. Driving distances: 1 hour from Bilbao via the A-8, 1 hour from Santander, 1.5 hours from San Sebastián and around 4 hours from Madrid via the A-67. There is a daily Alsa bus from Santander and Bilbao to Ramales.
What happens if it rains on Saturday?
The Asón kayak still runs in the rain unless the river is in serious flood. The via ferrata is rescheduled or swapped for guided caving in the Coventosa cave, which is indoor and weather-independent. We send you a real forecast the day before with options so you can decide.
What is the best time of year for this package?
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are the prime seasons: the Asón has generous flow, the temperature is right for climbing, and the valley colours are at their best. In summer (July-August) the river runs lower and there are more visitors. In winter the via ferrata closes due to ice on the walls; we offer caving as a substitute.
Do you run trips off-season (November-April)?
Yes, on request. The K2 via ferrata can close because of ice on the walls during cold months, and the Asón can run extreme flow after heavy rain. On those dates we swap those activities for guided caving (indoor and weather-independent) and a hike to the river source. Ask us about specific dates and we will confirm availability.
How long does each activity take?
Kayak on the Asón: 3 hours of active paddling (with the briefing and stops, add an extra hour). K2 via ferrata: 3 to 3.5 hours including the approach, briefing and descent. Both Saturday activities finish in time for a relaxed dinner at the inn.
What should I pack?
For the activities: hiking shoes with good grip, clothes that can get wet and dry quickly, a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen. For the inn: normal change of clothes. Towels are provided by the inn. All technical gear (kayak, wetsuit, helmet, harness, lanyards) is provided by us.
How do I reach the inn without a car?
There is a daily bus from Santander and from Bilbao to Ramales de la Victoria (Alsa line, around 1 hour from either city). The inn is a 10-minute taxi ride from the centre of Ramales. We send you up-to-date timetables and local taxi contacts once dates are confirmed.
Can the package be personalised?
Yes. There are curated alternatives for the adventure side (kayak in the Santoña wetlands, caving in the Coventosa cave, or canyoning in the valley instead of the via ferrata) and for the lodging (a self-contained rural house for groups of 4 to 6 instead of a room at the inn). You flag it in the next step and we close it to fit, with no extra cost beyond any real rate difference.
What does the price include?
Two nights at the inn in a double room with breakfast, both guided activities with full technical equipment, and activity insurance. It does not include meals not listed, transport to the valley, or Covalanas tickets (we tell you how to book them online; they are token amounts, around 3 €).
