The route climbs 334 meters over 8.2 kilometers, passing through stone paths and a historic stone pavement with more than 2,700 granite steps, reminiscent of Roman construction. This landscape seamlessly blends natural beauty with cultural heritage, set within a mountainous region just outside Madrid.

The Experience You start at the reservoir, where the air carries the scent of pine and damp earth. A wide trail winds through the pines toward the ascent along the stone pavement. The sound of your footsteps on the granite blends with bird songs. Along the way, you pause to admire the small hermitages of the Vía Crucis and enjoy sweeping views of Madrid and the Valley of the Fallen beneath a clear sky.

For Whom This hike is suitable for hikers with moderate fitness who are comfortable with elevation gain and steep steps. It’s ideal for families with children over 10 years old and for those who appreciate both natural and cultural heritage. Not recommended for individuals with limited mobility or those who avoid long stretches of stairs.

Local Context The Sierra de Guadarrama is a region where mountain tradition meets recent history. The Vía Crucis hermitages are part of a lasting cultural legacy integrated into the landscape, while the pine forests are home to native wildlife and shepherds who still practice seasonal transhumance in the area.
