Context
This circular hiking route takes place in the Sierra de Guadarrama, within the Peñalara National Park in the Madrid region. The 20 km trail climbs 788 meters and passes through pine forests, natural springs, and mountain terrain, including iconic landmarks such as the La Chorranca Waterfall and the Chozo Aranguez, a traditional shepherd’s shelter built from local stone. The wind carries the scent of thyme and pine, typical of this protected natural area.
The experience
Starting from the CENEAM parking or La Granja de San Ildefonso, you’ll follow marked trails crossing woodlands and small streams. There are scheduled rest stops to enjoy the calming, continuous sound of water at La Chorranca Waterfall, and to visit the Chozo Aranguez, where you can feel the rough texture of granite stones underfoot and observe the roots embedded in the earth. The route concludes with panoramic views of the Segovia plain from elevated vantage points.
For whom
This activity is suitable for hikers with moderate experience who can manage a 5 to 7-hour walk with nearly 800 meters of elevation gain. It is not recommended for young children, people with limited mobility, or those unable to walk long distances on uneven, variable terrain.
Local context
The region preserves traditional practices such as transhumance and the construction of shepherd huts, which form part of the cultural heritage of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The local community continues to maintain this legacy while safeguarding the natural environment of the national park.
