Discover Soria

Soria is Spain's least populated province and the one that best preserves the silence of the meseta. The Río Lobos Canyon is its best-known feature: 25 km of limestone gorges with a permanent griffon vulture colony soaring above the Templar hermitage of San Bartolomé; the valley-floor path can be walked with negligible elevation change. To the north, the Urbión peaks reach 2,228 m and the Laguna Negra refuge allows an easy approach on foot to a glacial lake of dark water enclosed by vertical rock faces. The Soria–Castejón de Olvega greenway covers 24 km between cereal fields and stone villages with the Moncayo silhouette in the distance. In autumn, mushroom routes draw groups from Soria city into the pine forests of Vinuesa and Navaleno in search of porcini and saffron milk caps.

Highlights

  • • Río Lobos Canyon: 25km of gorges with griffon vulture colony

Best time to visit

April–June for the canyon with spring flora and fewer visitors. October–November for mushrooms and autumn colour in the pine forests. Avoid August in the canyon: the car park gets congested and the heat is intense.

Practical tips

Río Lobos Canyon Natural Park has regulated access in summer: park in the designated entrance car parks and cover the 3 km to the hermitage on foot or by bike. Soria city is 32 km away and offers good accommodation as a base for the whole province.

Frequently asked questions sobre Soria

The full round trip along the canyon floor is about 20 km (6–7 hours). Most visitors do the central 8 km section to the San Bartolomé hermitage (2.5 hours one way). The path is flat and well signposted.
October and November are the key months, especially after rain followed by mild days. Porcini appear in the high pine forests (Vinuesa, Navaleno) and saffron milk caps in Scots pine stands. Get the free foraging permit from the local council.
In summer only (July–August) a bus runs from Soria to Vinuesa with a connection to Laguna Negra. For the rest of the year, a private vehicle is necessary. The Laguna Negra car park operates a regulated access system in summer.
