Description

Context Laguna Negra is a glacial lake located at 1,753 meters above sea level in the Sierra de Urbión, Soria. Its dark waters, with a true depth of 8 meters, reflect the eroded rock walls surrounding it, creating a unique high-mountain landscape in Castile and León. The area is protected within the Natural Park Laguna Negra and Glacial Circuses of Urbión, a region of significant geological and ecological value.

The Experience The route begins in the historic village of Vinuesa, where participants receive an introduction to local history and the surrounding natural environment. From there, a 4x4 vehicle travels along a forest trail to the Laguna Negra parking area. Following this, hikers walk 4–5 km along forest paths through beech and pine woods, with a total elevation gain of 200 meters. Along the way, the wind carries the scent of thyme and pine resin. Stops are made to listen to local legends, observe native flora and fauna, and finally admire the lake and its calm, dark waters.

For Whom This route is suitable for individuals with low to moderate physical fitness, families with young children, nature and culture enthusiasts, and those preferring low-impact outdoor activities. It is not recommended for people with limited mobility without assistance, or those seeking challenging, high-altitude hikes.

Local Context Vinuesa is a traditional Sorian village with authentic regional architecture and a rural atmosphere that preserves the essence of the Sierra de Urbión. The local community continues to share the legends surrounding Laguna Negra, a place that inspired writers such as Antonio Machado. The Park House (Casa del Parque) also offers educational exhibits on the region’s biodiversity and geology.
