Discover Zumaia

Zumaia is a coastal municipality in Gipuzkoa famous for the flysch, geological formations millions of years old that emerge from the Cantabrian Sea in vertical rock layers creating one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in the world. Zumaia's flysch cliffs were a filming location for Game of Thrones (Dragonstone). Itzurun Beach, wedged between the flysch cliffs, is the iconic image. The Zumaia-Deba coastal route covers 14 km along the GR-121 with continuous views of vertical rock strata spanning 60 million years of geological history, including the meteorite impact that killed the dinosaurs. Beyond the flysch, Zumaia has a pleasant old town, the Zuloaga Museum (in the Santiago hermitage, with works by the painter), Santiago beach and a fishing port with seafood restaurants. The Basque Coast Geopark, of which Zumaia is the star, is UNESCO-recognised. 30 minutes from San Sebastián and 45 from Bilbao via the AP-8.
