Monte Urgull

Monte Urgull is a 123-meter hill located in the historic center of San Sebastián, in the Basque Country. This natural and cultural space offers a privileged viewpoint over the city, La Concha Bay, and Santa Clara Island. At its summit stands the Mota Fortress, built in the 12th century and expanded in later centuries to defend the city from maritime attacks. The hill combines nature, history, and urban panoramas in an accessible setting for walking and discovery.

From the Mota Fortress viewpoint, you can admire La Concha Bay with its distinctive shell shape, Santa Clara Island in the bay's center, and San Sebastián's urban skyline with its buildings and beaches. The summit features the Sacred Heart of Jesus sculpture, known as Cristo de la Mota, watching over the city since 1950. The route includes wooded trails, remains of walls and military batteries, as well as green spaces and secondary viewpoints.

Historically, Monte Urgull has been a strategic point for San Sebastián's defense. The Mota Fortress was key during sieges and conflicts affecting the city, especially in the 17th and 19th centuries. The hill has witnessed the city's urban and social development and today serves as a green lung and leisure space for locals and visitors.

Visitors are advised to wear comfortable shoes for walking on paths with some incline. Access is free and open all day, though the fortress has no specific opening hours. The visit can last between 1 and 2 hours depending on pace and stops. It is suitable for families and pets, with medium accessibility due to some stairs and uneven paths. The best time to visit is spring and autumn when the weather is pleasant and vegetation is at its best.
