There are two ways to reach Faro del Caballo: by walking down the hundreds of steps carved into the hillside of Mount Buciero, or by paddling. The second is slower, quieter, and offers something the first does not: watching the cliff grow before you as you approach, with the white lighthouse clinging to the rock and the water so clear that you can see the bottom beneath your board.

The crossing sets off from Laredo and crosses the bay towards Santoña, an open stretch of water where the tidal current is noticeable and where it is advisable to go in a group and with a guide. You paddle standing up on a paddleboard, so this is not an introductory outing: you must be able to stand and paddle with some ease, as it covers several kilometers and the bay's sea is not always flat.

There are two versions. The short one crosses the bay from Laredo to Santoña and back. The long one continues along the cliffs of Buciero, within the natural park, up to the lighthouse and the coves that can only be seen from the water.

The schedule depends on the tide and the wind—the northeast wind creates chop in the afternoon—so it is confirmed with the school the day before. On clear days, from the center of the bay, you can see the entire Salvé beach, five kilometers of sand, and in the distance, the Picos.

About the Area

Laredo and Santoña face each other from both ends of the same bay, separated by a channel that reveals sandbanks at low tide. Behind Santoña rises Mount Buciero, a 376-meter limestone massif covered in Cantabrian oak and surrounded by cliffs, with Faro del Caballo hanging halfway up the wall and Faro del Pescador at the tip. All this is within the Parque Natural de las Marismas de Santoña, Victoria y Joyel, one of the largest wetlands in the north and a key stopover for migratory birds. Salvé beach, in Laredo, has five kilometers of sand.
