Description

Paddling in the estuary is one thing, and paddling among waves is something else entirely. This class is the bridge between the two: one hour in the open sea, off the coast of Isla (Arnuero), with a paddle surf instructor by your side to teach you how to read the swell, paddle out without losing your board, and catch a wave standing up without ending up in the water on your first try.

This is not a beginner class. The starting point is that you already know how to stand up on the board and paddle with some ease in calm water: here the sea moves, the board moves with you, and the balance you had in still waters no longer serves you completely. For this reason, a medium or high SUP level is required.

We work on paddling out against the whitewater, body positioning when the wave arrives, turning, and riding down. One hour allows for many attempts, many falls and, almost always, for that first wave caught standing up, which is exactly the reason why you come.

The school meets at Arena beach, in Isla, and schedules are adjusted to the sea conditions: the Cantabrian Sea is in charge, and the waves are not the same every day.

Location
Expert Recommendations

Come wearing a swimsuit and bring dry clothes to change into. Waterproof sunscreen and some fluids: an hour of paddling through waves is more tiring than it looks. If you come from doing SUP only on rivers or reservoirs, expect to fall quite a bit during the first half hour; it is part of the process. Confirm with the school what equipment is included in your class and what time you set off, because the time depends on the sea, not the clock.

Physical Requirements

Requires medium or high paddle surf level: ability to stand on the board and paddle with ease. Water confidence is needed, as it is practiced in open sea with waves, and normal physical fitness to paddle for an hour against the foam. This activity is not recommended for children or those who have never been on a board before.

About the Area

Isla belongs to the municipality of Arnuero, on the Costa Oriental de Cantabria, between the estuaries of Ajo and Noja. It is a succession of beaches open to the Cantábrico —la Arena, Ris, Quejo— with real swell, very different from the still waters of the marshland just behind. The village has seasonal services, parking next to the beaches, and is a fifteen-minute drive from Santoña and the Victoria and Joyel marsh reserve.
