What you'll experience
-
Collado Jermoso · ~4 hrs
Direct ascent from Valdeón to the Collado Jermoso refuge (2,064 m), on the south face of the Central Massif. Short day to get acclimated. Spectacular views at the valley’s end. Passport stamp.
-
Jermoso → Cabaña Verónica · ~3 hrs
Short but demanding trek to Cabaña Verónica (Diego Mella, 2.325 m), with 18 beds nestled into the cliff face. The most scenic stage of the Ring: exposed traverses and views of Urrieles. Early arrival, a well-deserved rest.
-
Veronica → Vega de Urriellu · ~3 hrs
Descent via Horcados Rojos towards Vega de Urriellu (Delgado Úbeda, 1.953 m), the refuge below Naranjo de Bulnes. A short day allowing you to enjoy views of Picu from the meadow. Some groups stay here an extra day to rest or climb Naranjo with a hired guide.
-
Cabrones Peak → ~3 hours
Short and challenging trek through the gorge to Jou de los Cabrones (José Ramón Lueje, 2.040 m), the most basic shelter on the Ring. Arrival at the heart of the Central Massif.
-
Bulnes · ~4 hours
Long descent to the town of Bulnes, overnight stay in La Terenosa or a rural house depending on availability. Complete change of scenery: from the high karst landscape to the green Cares valley. Dinner in town, not at a mountain refuge.
-
Bulnes → Vega de Ario · ~7 hrs
The longest stage. Ascent from Bulnes along the Camín Real, crossing passes in the Western Massif and arrival at the Marqués de Villaviciosa refuge in Vega de Ario (1,630 m). Depart before eight o'clock.
-
Ario → Vegarredonda → Valdeón · final stage
Pass through Vegarredonda (additional stamp if included in the reservation) and descent to the valley until Posada de Valdeón. End of the crossing, picked up by Picuco. Passport with six stamps.
